I have an old Palm Pilot and I would like to get a Visor.
Can I keep both the Palm Pilot OS (2.0; I understand my Palm cannot go higher) and the Visor OS on the same computer?
Can I export Palm Pilot data to the Visor?
Assistance would be appreciated

juncal,

You should be able to use both machines on one PC. The one major clarification - you can't use the same user name on both machines. They must be different. The procedure would be to install the cd/desktop software and pick a new user name when prompted. Then you'll be able to sync both machines however you won't sync identical data.

Your Palm Pilot doesn't have infrared transfer so the only way to transfer the data would be the following: instead of picking a new user name as above pick the same name as you currently have on your Palm Pilot and when the hot sync realizes that the Visor is empty it will "restore" the files from the backup from the desktop.

Be advised though that the older Palm desktop software was not reliable when restoring to the handheld so some of your data may not upload completely. It is store on the desktop probably in the backup folder nested under the Palm software so you should be able to "double click" to initiate the Palm installer to reinstall any files that might not be restored.

Then you could perform a hard reset on the Palm Pilot and choose a new user from the Palm Desktop and sync the Palm Pilot to estabish the conduit or syncing user name. There would not be any data at that time in this freshly synced Palm Pilot but you could start loading new data.

Palm Pilot/Visor compatibility

Reading your very informative message again suggested a question or two. If I understand you correctly, the procedure outlined is based on the installation of the new Visor OS that would upgrade my current Palm OS desktop software (v2.00). Will the old Pilot recognize or be recognized by the newer OS?

Yes. The PalmPilot is compatible with Handspring's version of Palm Desktop. Changes are minimal. If you are syncing the Visor by USB and want to sync the PalmPilot on the same PC, make sure both USB and Serial are selected on the HotSync pop-up menu on the system tray.
