My Visor Deluxe synchs fine when plugged into the computers USB port. My ADI Microscan 6P monitor has an integeated 4 port hub on the back. I know the hub works fine because my USB scanner works fine when plugged into the hub. The Visor does not work when plugged into the hub. I called tech support and they confirmed many people have the same problem and they are working on a solution. The problem is that when you synce Cisor for the first time when connected directyl to the computer USB port, Windows 98 (SP1) says - device detected - Handspring Visor, but when connected to a hub it just syas device detected and then doesn't work.

I have a D-Link USB hub which works with my visor every time. No problems at all. Is your hub powered or does it rely on the computer's power. This may very well be the problem. If it's not a self powered hub, it may be trying to draw too much power from the computer, so the signal is degraded.

The FAQ has a couple of hubs that do work with the Visor for SOME people's setups.

Entrega mac hub7U works great (using win98 SE). It is a powered hub and I have 5 devices on it (Zip, Intel Camera, Joystick, Ethernet, plus the Visor cradle).

I, too, use the DLink hub and have found it to be very reliable.

As a curiosity, occasionally when I first insert the Visor in the cradle (before hitting the sync button), I will get a USB warning in Windows saying the voltage limit has been exceeded. Windows then gives me the choice of resetting the port or just closing which requires a reboot to regain the port.

I have a powered hub that works fine; it also runs my printer and my scanner. I have Win 98 (first version). The hub has no name on it, and shows in device manager as "general purpose USB hub". It was a low cost unit I purchased at Fry's.

I'm using a Linksys 4 port hub model USBHUB04. Running my mouse and visor. Works on my laptop with the hub powered or un-powered.

I too have a cheap, no name powered hub and it works just fine. Hot Syncs every time with Win98 (first ed).

If VisorCentral are worried about spreading doubt about HS, maybe Eug or someone should edit the title of this thread... There seems to be a lot of people syncing through USB hubs for it to be a 'confirmed bug'...

These used to be Entrega, now are Xircom. Dunno which USB version supported. "Only Xircom hubs feature individually switched ports - if one USB device fails, the rest continue to operate. Auto Recovery Technology - if a port shuts down, it will automatically reset itself when a new device is plugged in." Not sure what this means.

Asante. Meets USB standard version 1.1. Supports auto-partitioning - sounds like the description of the Xircom. Cheap.

All of the above have an ice/blue model, and the first two are verified to work with the Visor (for some).

I'm not sure what all that means either... it sounds a lot like marketing-speak though
Surely, since USB is hot-swapable any hub can suffer one device failing as you could just unplug it and plug it back in again.

The features I shopped by were external power , status LEDs and price. I bought a cheap 4 port and apart from wishing I'd bought more ports, I've been perfectly happy with it.

I bought a SIIG USB Bay Hub which fits in my 3.5" floppy drive bay and it works fine. I'm on a Win98 v1 machine and the hub uses my computer power.

I love it and use it to power a graphics tablet, my USB Visor hot synch and my compact flash card reader. It's a non powered hub and cost me $15 (it was labeled $25) at Fry's.

So I got the D-Link Ice coloured hub - matches my Ice USB cradle.

Works great. When plugged in, Windows automatically configured it. When I plugged in the Visor cradle it configured that too and knew it was a Handspring Visor (unlike brady's problem).

Works great.

However, I still have the same problem. Anyone have the same problem?

If I'm transferring a file to my Zip drive and try initiating a HotSync my file transfer is terminated. However, if I start the HotSync first and then the file transfer it works. Go figure.

Concurrent "high volume" data transfers are a widely reported problem with USB (and with Win9x with no help from USB). For example, try formatting a floppy disk and copying a large file from a network server to local hard disk at the same time - - on second thought, don't try this at home. You can crash your machine.

FWIW, these issues even trouble the very mature SCSI world. For example, many tape drive and backup software vendors recommend connecting tape drives on different channels from the hard disks (some go so far as recommending different interface cards altogether).
