Is there a way to erase the software installed ON the omnisky modem? I want to use it in Israel, with a different provider (the provider here wants me to install a file called minstrel30.prc ), with my visor deluxe. I know that Ominsky will not work with deluxes, but I don't want to use ominsky, just the modem itself.
(I guess I should have purchased a 'virgin' modem from Novatel but I didn't, I got am Omnisky one from Amazon, and am trying to figure a better way than returning it).
When I put the Omnisky modem in my deluxe all I get is a msg telling me to upgrade to a platinum/prism.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Supposedly, if you tap Ok the OmniSky browser will still work but without all of its functionality. Read this old thread.

Hey thanks! I was almost about to pack the thing up and send it back to Amazon.
I'm not sure it works yet, I'll have to get an account with the wireless provider tomorrow. I'm hoping they
don't give me too much trouble, I'll be the first handspring user with them, they're used to Palm V and Minstrel V's (Handspring just recently started selling in Israel, I got mine in the US).

if you want to erase the software installed on the modem you can use this file here.
http://memplug.sjweb.net/myupdate.htm

this program is for memplug, but it works for minstrel s modem too. I already try it with my minstrel s. when I try to upgrade my modem to revision c, I got an error. so i erase the modem flash and install the upgrade again.

Good Luck!

Talking

It isn't tomorrow yet so I haven't gone to sign up for a wireless account. But I'm pretty sure it WILL work because when I turn the modem on now (after installing my provider's software) it appears to be logging on - checks the boxes saying 'cellular signal present' and 'cdpd service detected', just the box with 'modem ready/registered' doesn't get checked.
AMAZING!!!

Thanks again,

Vered

Now that you have the OS software out of the module how do you flash in something new, like a file mover application, could you use the update to the original thin modem that had this maby?

I never try it. After the flash is empty, I run the OS updater rev c again and now my modem is working fine.

That's good for you, but the whole point is that this person doesn't want the OmniSky software...

but he said that he has a flash updater from his other provider. so after he erase the flash, I think he can just flash it with his other provider software.

First of all I'm a she . I'm afraid of deleting the software on the modem, because if it turns out that I can't get
it working in Israel, I'll want to return it to amazon. Hopefully there isn't a lot on the modem itself, just something that makes it check if you have a prism/platinum or not. As written above, if you press OK it seems that you can still use the modem.
Thanks again, still haven't gone to get it connected (work, etc. ).

You might want to check with the Wireless providers in whatever area of Israel you're going to be in before you take the plunge. It's unclear at this point how much support CDPD has abroad - witness the fact that OmniSky is using the VISORPHONE instead of the Minstrel in the UK and Europe, since the VisorPhone is GSM-based. Check to see if there's a CDPD network to log on to...if there isn't, there's no point.

That's ok, the only wireless provider for palms here does use cdpd, and they sell the Minstrel V for palm V's.
They just don't really know what to do with handspring visors since they only recently started to be sold in Israel.
