Question

I have been hotsyncing with my Visor Platinum Hotsync code that came on my install CD with no problems. I tried to upgrade to Palm Desktop 4.01 and when I hotsynced the computer detected new hardware and installed a palmusbd.sys driver for it. Now pressing the hotsyncing button on my cradle does nothing. I tried to reinstall the hotsync software on my install CD over the Palm 4.0 hotsync to no avail. I also tried to force a driver change through the control panel to handspring's visorusb.sys driver...also no go. I've tried uninstalling all traces of Palm software & reinstalling the default Handspring CD software, but the new hardware detection wizard will always ask me for Palm's USB driver, not Handspring's, so I'm dead in the water. Any ideas? suggestions? I'm assuming that if I can just get the system to prompt and install the Handspring driver by default all will be well....

Thanks in adv.
-Jake

Handspring has a fix in their patches and upgrades web site that wipes the registry of any of the hooks Palm's desktop left behind. They then recommend reinstalling their own desktop software.

I remain HIGHLY disappointed at Handspring's slowness to address basic useability issues like IR synching with W2K. Apparently they can put a programmer onto the task of creating a patch to undo the Palm desktop, but they can't come up with their own version to satisfy the very many users who are clammoring to get Palm's desktop because they think it will address the stuff they want.USBRegistryFix

tried that...

I've tried the USB registry fix, it didn't help in this instance. It has helped in the past though. To be fair, the registry fix is a simple program that deletes specific Visor registry keys, whereas the IR issues are a bit more complex. I myself have had no problems IR hotsyncing with my laptop using the Visor CD install software and the Palm IR hotsync patch.

Thanks for your help!

fixed...& how i did it

Well thanks to a Handspring tech support answer that put me on the right track I finally figured out how to reset the USB connection. After removing the Palm USB driver using the device manager, I hunted down and removed the Palm oem*.inf file in the winnt\inf director. That was the file that was telling win2k to keep bugging me for Palm's USB driver instead of the Handspring driver.

Tip: do a search for files containg "handspring" in the winnt\inf folder to find the relevant inf file(s)
