There's an article on the process of making VisorPhone on today's Wall Street Journal.
Some Quotes from WSJ:
"Instead of having to tap in a phone number, Mr. Hawkins suggested that consumers be able to dial directly from phone numbers already entered into their handheld computer's memory. A feature that could bring up a detailed log on phone calls made, taken or missed was included. Buttons for 3-way calls and hanging up were made. And five screen pages of speed dials that could easily be accessed came next."
The initial project code was named "Gumby".
A summer intern at Handspring blabbed the code names of several internal company projects at a crowded Silicon Valley restaurant.
To protect leaks and eavesdropper, it was later renamed to "Sparky".
It was 18 months of top-secret research and labor.
"Even if VisorPhone isn't embraced by the public, however, he says he intends to continue focusing on the convergence of handheld organizer with the mobile phone. "Later, I'll add data and e-mail and I'll make the machine even smaller," he says. "I can build over the wirelessly enabled handheld device, with voice and everything." "

Seems like the secret was out earlier .. no wonder the stock surged!
