Does anyone have an idea on how to use this new cable that's for sale?

What software would you use to surf the web?

What number would you dial into?

Is there a cheap ISP for US access?

Does it cost more than your normal wireless fee? (SprintPCS)

How would you retrieve email - some sort of POP setting in a mail program?

I've always wanted something like this to come along, but I wish there was an article talking more about "mobile handspringing" and lessons learned - maybe a little on ISP's available and to pros and cons associated with a few of the big ones... Being a DSL user, I'd hate to pay too much more for a dial in ISP when I'd only be using it for an hour or two a month...

If anyone knows of a good info source either here at VC or somewhere else, please post.

thesupplynet that the article talks about supplies should just plug into your visor and motorola/samsung phone depending on the phone you have and the cable you buy

I don't do a lot of websurfing using my cell phone connection, since it's 14.4k. However, when I have surfed I've used PalmScape.. Very nice

For SprintPCS you don't need an ISP. Goto Cables4pdas.com and then click on SpringPCS under QNC settings.

For POP email is use Eudora internet suite. It's free. YOu can get it at Eudora.com and it comes with a web browser.

In order to get online with SprintPCS you ahve to add the wireless web option ($10 per month) and then you jsut use your regular minutes from there.

Also, It's my understanding that the CDMA technology can be upgraded to support 100kbps+ connections.. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I believe I read it on here a month ago or so. Can't wait till sprint upgrades to that..

Do I need to have wireless web turned on to access the web via the handspring? I thought that was only if I wanted to surf on the phone? Or is that $10/month going to give me internet access for the PDA (in lieu of an ISP)?

(this is all quite confusing)

While this cable idea is great - I wish it came with the instructions and software as a complete solution so I could get up and running right away...

Yes, you need the $10 per month wireless web option in order to use your handspring with the cell phone. Without it they won't let you send any data and thus no Internet. And yes, this does replace your ISP.

The process is very simple.

$10 per month Wireless web from sprint
Motorola/Samsung phone
Cable from thesupplynet.com or cables4pdas.com
They send you instructions for the settings when you get your cable.

It took me about 30 seconds after I got my cable to be online. (that's with putting in the network/modem settings)

It's very easy

Wireless with ATT?

Anybody using a Nokia 6160 with ATT for connection to a Deluxe? If so, what did you have to do to make it work. I've got a company issued ATT cell phone that I have to cart around, and I wouldn't mind it actually being of some use to me....

It still doesn't make complete sense, but I'm sold - I'll order the cable and see if I can get it all up and running. $10 a month - jeez, that's a lot of money to be using up the same prepaid minutes I paid for!

I have a Motorola StarTac and a Verizon cell phone account. I use a similar cable from www.cables4pdas.com to get email from my Visor Dlx and surf the web. I have a separate dial up ISP for email, and I use the Eudora Internet Suite 2.0 (read "free.0")to access my email and browse. There is no additional charge to my Verizon account for email and web browsing. The Motorola phone is a CDMA account that can handle both digital and analog calls; however, the cable does not work when I am in analog coverage areas. You will need a modem for those areas.

Free web browsing and email is not the same for Sprint cell phone accounts and some others. For those, you may have to pay extra.

Think of it this way: your prepaid minutes are "voice minutes," and now you need "data minutes" too. Someone else already pointed out that you don't HAVE to pay $10 a month to Sprint; you can instead get Wireless Web access at $0.39 a minute, a la carte (although it probably still comes out of your minutes). So if you're not going to be online for more than $10.00/$0.39 = 25 minutes a month then you'd be better off not paying the $10 fee.

Use SprintPCS

Sprint has such cheap plans out right now that there should be adequate minutes for both voice and data. My current plan is $75/month and includes 1000 peak time minutes and 2000 off peak time minutes. With 3000 minutes per month (which my company pays for anyway!), you'll have plenty of time to talk, receive email and surf the web.

PS. A new company www.gomadic.com is selling the cables cheaper than the supplynet and cable4pdas.com. They also sell the raw parts in case you want to build it yourself.

Sprint has a new plan which I think is called "Digital Everywhere" which is the old plan with all the features thrown in, plus a ton of minutes all for the same rate - I'm pretty happy with it. $59/month:

*wireless web
*400 anytime / 1600 evening and weekend minutes
*Voice dialing
*Free long distance

Great deal - and like you said - I can't imagine using up all my minutes - I only do email and surf the web in short spurts when doing it wirelessly anyways!
