I found a website that has a downloadable template you can use to cut the sheet of vinyl..

(I'm sure this has been around before)

Anyone holding a patent must force (with legal action) anyone infringing on the patent to stop manufacturing/selling. Therefore the longer Writerite/Fellowes continue selling/manufacturing screen protectors the more difficult it would be for the patent holder get the courts to stop the selling/manufacturing. In other words - a patent holder must aggressively force people to stop infringing on the patent. I have not seen any action against these companies, and as time goes on - the patents become more unenforceable. No one will step in to stop the infringments except the patentholder.

Rain-X for screen protection

Here is an idea I use that I have not seen discussed here.
Rather than put a piece of plastic over my screen I treat the screen to a coat of a polymer polish that does a very effective job of keeping the screen from scatches. I have used it for almost 2 years now.

Just apply a drop of Rain-X once every 2 weeks to the screen.
This is the same stuff that you apply to your car windshield to make water bead.
It makes the screen much smoother to write on and the side benefit is that it is harder to scratch.
