Unhappy I can't believe it actually happened...

It has happened. I have laughed at other people it has happened to, only to find myself in the same boat.

My Blue Visor Deluxe, Brand-New as of 12/5/2001, fell from a table onto a hard tile floor. It had the "cracking" noise, and the screen has been cracked diaganolly across the "real" part of the screen (excluding graffiti area). After leaving the batteries out of it for half an hour and doing a hard-reset, I have gotten the Visor to work again, though the digitizer is shot to hell (Think of it like a cellphone - If I press 4, 6 shows up. If I press 6, 4 shows up...and 5 does nothing.)

I am so glad I "wasted" $40 for the Handspring Product Replacement Plan now...I have a new Visor being shipped to me, Airborne Express. I just hope it gets here soon! I am going through AvantGo denial!

Has anyone else replaced a product to Handspring throught the PRP? Did you get back a new product, or a refurb? And did it come with a new cradle, case, etc.?

I've replaced things via warranty before, and I can pretty much guarantee that you'll get a refurb with no accessories (other than the stylus and default plastic cover). You'll have to restore your stuff to the new one and then ship back the broken one (you probably want to do a hard reset and remove the batteries) in the same package. Historically, Handspring has only shipped new Visors when there was no stock of refurbs. Somehow I doubt that this is the case with the Deluxes.

sorry about what happened. hopefully your replacement will be a new one.

about a month ago i knocked my plat off a rather high bar. it fell to the concrete floor of the restaurant and the cover flew across the room. however, the visor sustained no damage. i was shocked. i think i've got the world's luckiest visor. besides this drop, i've left it in a cab twice, both times it was returned.

Boy...you are lucky

I have a friend telling me of a time she left her Visor Deluxe on top of her car and forgot to take it down when she took off...when she realized what happened, she came back and found the visor luckily ok. Of course, she uses both cases that came with the visor...though the leather one was about ten feet away when she found it...

I just want my Visor! I am going through denial! I also hope it is blue again!

I got mine as a refurb from someone who didn't want to wait for their replacement. Came with everything in the standard Visor package.

WOW! IT HAS COME ALREADY!!

Less than 24 Hours after calling Handspring, I already have my replacement! (And it is still blue!). Now I just have to HotSync and back everything up again! EDIT: Just got done HotSyncing and it is like it was on the old Visor...everything is the way I left it! One HotSync and I got EVERYTHING back, even AvantGo! Yeah!

I'm not sure if it is new or a refurb, it came in its own box with only the visor, a hard case, and a stylus (edit: and two energizer industrial alkaline batteries). It looks new and is great so far! I'm happy because on my old one, the buttons were rubbing off and the case holder on top was starting to crack, so now I can start new!

Kudos to Handspring for getting me a replacement so quick!

Terry,

I beleive you can tell if it is a refurb if it has a dot next to serial number.

Good! Then it is brand new...there is no dot.

today has been a great day. Not only did the Visor come (less than 20 hours after I called handspring) but a hinge for my broken FlipCover also came (another similar drop where the flipcover hinge took the heat...). Now all I need is the Matchbook Drive that I just bought from ashmed for $5 to come! Hopefully tomorrow. [edit: which did happen!]

My opinion of Handspring has skyrocketed through the past day - for a $40 warranty, I got a brand new handheld in under 20 hours...the only problem was I still had to go visorless at school, which sucked!

Well, you also have a Prism (if you ever feel you don't want it anymore, e-mail me )

my Prism fell down many times, and when something didn't work alright, Handspring replaced it. I'd say they have pretty good support(I DID NOT have the protection plan)

you're not gonna believe this one:

two days after my last post (above), i was in the bathroom, just took a bath, and am leaving the room. i had some books in one hand and my lucky plat (with soundsgood) in the other.

i open the door, the plat slips from my hand and hits the edge of the tub. the module falls out and lands on the bathmat, the cover of the visor and the plat itself (which separate) fall into the tub of water, which is draining, and completely submerge.

i quickly grab it and run to my room where i dissasemble it (the screwdriver keeps slipping on the screws and i'm fretting) after remove the extend rechargeable battery.

i finally get it open and it's all wet inside between the screen and what i assume is the digitizer.

i towel off all the water and then put the visor next to a block heater where i leave it overnight.

next day i take the batteries out of my vcr remote and pop them in the visor (didn't feel like fighting with the extend battery). the pda powers up and then quickly streaks and powers off and won't come on again.

damn.

the next day, the new soundsgood i bought (because i wanted an energy clip, which this one had, and i knew i could sell mine) arrives in the mail. the next day after that, my two chameleon stylis arrive in the mail. ugh.

i'm ashamed of bragging about how lucky i am.

so today i go out and buy a new neo. i come home and play with it and it works great. just for the hell of it, i put the new batteries from the neo into the plat, and IT WORKS! i think that the problem before was just that the remote control batteries were dead!

i can't believe it. so now i have a smoke neo which i will return to future shop tomorrow.

my plat rocks. i wonder if it'll stop bullets if i keep it in my breast pocket.

Is there a darwin awards for Visors, or whatever it is called?

You would win it hands down!

I'm glad your plat is working, that was a scare!

I think I heard a story where that happened for a Russian journalist or something with his psion!

I KEEP telling newbies over and over...

You are GOING to drop it while it is unprotected, so get a good case you can keep it in as close to 7/24 as possible.

You are GOING to drop it, period, so make sure whatever case you use 'bounces' (er... protects it totally, form any angle, ideally open or closed.)

You are GOING to scratch the screen somehow. Use a good full-screen screen protecter.

You are GOING to crash it somehow. Back up the data often, and in at least two different ways/places.

You are GOING to loose or misplace it. Put your name as 'Owner' and turn off/lock the device each time so it shows up (mention a reward for return and think about using a work address). Use at least SOME security, and consider a lost and found service.

You are GOING to get caught with dead batteries when you don't want them. Keep a back-up power source handy, and back up the data in at least two ways (wow, deja vu!)

You are GOING to loose the stylus. Get and carry a spare that fits in the silo. (Reset pin is critical, mini-screwdriver is unimportant, pen is optional.)

You are GOING to forget one or more of these at the worst possible moment- consider a lost or damaged replacement policy (of course, our options seem to be diminishing with these!)

Whenever anyone doubts me on these, I just show them examples garnered from these posts!

Great advice, Madkins. The only problem is that most people put those plans into action AFTER they have dropped it, had a hard reset, or have dead batteries. Before, most people, myself included, will have the attitude that it won't happen to them.

Terrysalmi mentioned a story about someone's PSION taking a bullet. I haven't heard that story but there is one over in the Plam GraveYard at PalmInfo Center where some guys shotgun barrel blew-up and his PDA stopped a fragment that would have hit him in the chest. I would have posted the link but PalmInfo Center appears to be down right now (Maybe they are being hacked again! )

MAdkins - hey, I kept my Prism in a full cover case (my old PalmPilot leather belt clip case - it just fit!) and it STILL got broken! Jumped on by my 2-year old, probably. How unfair is it that Mensachicken can submerge his Plat in a bathtub with no damage?!!!

Terry - I did in fact go with the expedited replacement, since there didn't seem to be any third party source for a new Prism screen. $150, but it was in my hands the next day. BackupBuddy worked just perfect for the reinstall, although I noticed somebody recommended trying Filez.

A little pricey service for $150, IMHO, but I am still amazed just how fast they can get it to ya! About 15-20 hours after I called them, in my case
