Cool Prism and Nokia 7160

Nokia 7160

Has anyone been able to set up a connection to one of these yet? Just got mine today and am interested to see if I can get out of buying a modem by using the IR capabilities of both the phone and my prism.....

Any ideas / suggestions?

Thanks!

I did it this week!

I am in the same situation...with a Prism and 7160. Last week I successfully connected the Prism to the 7160 via IR. I am not sure if it matters, but I am also signed up for the Nokia Wireless Internet Option. Here is a summary of what I did:

1) In Prism Preferences-Connection, set up a "Nokia" profile: Connection Method = IrCOMM to Modem, Dialing = TouchTone.

2)In Prism Preferences-Network, set up your ISP info. In Details: Connection Type = PPP, Idle timeout = Power off, Query DNS is checked and IP Address Automatic is checked.

3) Turn on IR on 7160

4) Hit connect button in Prism Preferences-Network. You should see the connection attempted on the 7160

I am still experimenting a little, but at least is works now.

Good Luck
MS

OK, now I've heard of a couple of others successfully doing this. So I took my Prism down to the local Cingular store and tried this myself. The only difference with my setup is due to my ISP -- Query DNS is unchecked, and I manually enter my two DNS servers. I'm in Ann Arbor, MI, if that makes any difference.

I used the saleswoman's 7160, which had data service ("Wireless Internet") activated. I used the WAP browser to be sure. I activated IR on the 7160 and beamed an address. Then I tried the modem connection. The 7160 indicated an IR connection and data call, but then I got "data call ended" and on the Prism, a "0x1102" error. Then I tried using 00 for the phone number and got the Prism's "dialing" dialog, but it never got farther.

What am I doing wrong?

To be complete, the text of the Prism error was "No carrier."

Well you still need to dial up your isp. It is a data call and it doesn't actually use the phones connection to the net but just uses the phone's internal modem so instead of "00" as the number you should try your ISP's # with all your info to authenticate.

To be clear, in the first attempt I used my ISP's number; that's when I got the "no carrier: 0x1102" error. In the second, I used "00" as the number.

O.K. I registered and jumped on the bulletin board, just to participate
in this discussion.

After weeks of trying to get my Prism to talk to my Nokia 7160 with
no avail, I gave up. Hopefully, in light of the fact that it appears some
have had some success, my dream of doing away with my laptop on
business trips (just for email) and not having to buy a modem for
my Prism can be revived.

Here's my scenario (much the same as dms3 but with more detail):
My Prism is configured as follows:
Palm OS 3.5.2.H1
Pref>Connection>Nokia
Connection Method = IrComm to Modem
Dialing = TouchTone
Volume=Low
Pref>Connection>Nokia>Details
Speed=57.6 kbps
Flow Ctl=Automatic
Init String=(None)
Pref>Network
Service="STARTUP"
User Name=(Username)
Password=(assigned)
Connection=Nokia
Phone=(no. to dial up connection)
Pref>Network>Details
Connection Type=PPP
Idle timeout=Power Off
Query=DNS
IP Address=Automatic

When I attempt to dial via IR to my Nokia 7160 the following happens:
On the Prism
"Conneting"
"Dialing STARTUP"
On the Nokia
"Connecting"
Two audible tones sound...
On the Prisim
"Error:no carrier (0x1102)"

Please help. Anyone?

Cig, that's what happened to me. Just to be sure, do you have wireless internet service? And where is your home area, as far as Cingular is concerned? Since Cingular is composed of a number of different carriers, I'm interested to see if there are any regional differences in whether this works.

Settings look OK

Cig,

Your Prism settings look OK. Mine works fine in this way. I am using Cingular (with wireless internet option) in Houston

To dms3:
I'm located in Memphis, TN.

To mszatny:
My phone is not set up with wireless internet. I'm wondering
if that's hendering the 7160 from behaving like a modem
connection and thus the Prism errors out.

If I dial the number directly, the modem on the other end
whistles to life. However, somewhere between the Prism
and the 7160, the IR won't mount the connection.

Any input?

Cig

My guess is that you will need the Wireless Internet / Data service. The Basic Service for me is only about $6-7 / month.

O.K. That sucks.
When I read the manuals for the NOKIA, it doesn't mention anything about
having to get additional services to make the IR transmit data to another
device. It would seem as though the communication with the 7160 would
go something like this:
"Hello Nokia 7160 this is Prism talking. Dial this no for me"
"O.K. Prism here we go." Prism dials no.
"Hey Prism, got someone who want to talk with you...boy is this guy loud"
"O.K. NOKIA, put him on the line. I'll use a few tricks I know to keep
him on line with what I need"
THE END.

All things considered, the NOKIA should already be prepared for this.
Anything else would seem only an added expense to make it work.
Hopefully this is not the case. Please tell me that I've just done
something wrong....Please!!!

Not Nokia in this case. I also use Cingular and the "Extra" service is coming from them. The phone can handle it fine but without setting up the service you can't get access using their network as a DATA call. It's probably just a way to scam some more money out us but without signing up for the service we can't connect

Well txag98 I'm going to go to my Cingular service provider and
try out my connection in the same manner that dms3 did.
I'm curious, just as dms3 is, whether there's something else at play here.

To dms3:
Didn't you say that you tried connecting to a phone that was setup for Wireless Internet
and your Prism still managed not to connect.

Yep, that's what I did. Hope you have better luck, cig! Let us know what happened, either way.

To all:

Well, I visited a couple of retail centers and couldn't get a hold
of a Wireless Internet phone. However, I did get a few numbers
of people who could help. After a couple of calls, I discovered
that the problem with the functionality of the NOKIA IR has been
reported numerous times. However, I couldn't get a solid
answer as to why I couldn't get things to work, as documented.

One NOKIA technician suggested that getting the WIP service
is the solutions. However, after discussing the fact that I
only need IR transmitter/receiver to transmit the "noise" that
I would otherwise get through the speaker when I dial a
modem line directecly, he concurred that the WIP service
should not be required and that this function should be built-in.
He suggested talking to someoneelse at NOKIA. Bottom-line
no results.

I still believe that there must be something in the programming
of the NOKIA that turns the transmit/recieve functionallity of
the IR on such that calls won't get dropped when trying to connect
via the IR. I'll keep you posted.

Anyone tried a Visor Data Cable with Nokia 7xxx?

Has anyone tried to use a Visor Data Cable with the Nokia PC Data cable and one of these Nokia 7160? I would be super interested in knowing that.

For instance, if anyone had tried one of the Mark/Space cables, etc.

Nope. Have not tried the data cables... not as geeky as using an IR
to connect.

Here's an update on my efforts to get the IR connection working:

One word.... "SUCCESS"
After a couple of weeks talking with the local Cingular reps
(eventually talking to one that turned out to be an old high
school classmate) I finally made the connection. Here's a
recap of what it took:
10+ calls to Cingular
10+ calls to Nokia
10+ more calls to Cingular
trying out 5 different plans that were to provide me with
a data connection

The local Cingular folks had never been exposed to my problem,
but through a little trial and error, we found a plan that
made the connection work.
In short, you must have a service that allows data
transferring. Although the Nokia is capable of "handshaking"
etc., the cellular service must recognize the call as a data call before
the 7160 behaves. In essence, you have to get one of their
wireless internet plans (the one that gives you the ability
to receive e-mail on your phone works). I think that this was
something that was eluded to in previous postings.
Once you've got the service, when you connect via the Prism
the phone switches to "Data Call" and everything works.

I've tried Eudora Mail and Eudora Web. Are there any others
that work better?
