Thanks for your reply. Yes, I will be using a Mac for web/graphics design. No, I am not interested in getting an iMac. The screen is too small, and the expandability is limited. I will definitely go with a G4 tower, I'm leaning towards the entry level 400MHZ G4 for $1600. It seems like a good inexpensive start for a pro system. I'm really not a big fan of the Cube, it looks too much like a Dehumidifier or waste paper basket..no offense to the Mac community on that remark.
quote: I just got a low end G4 tower a couple weeks ago from outpost.com. I added an IBM deskstar 45 GB IDE hard drive (very fast drive), a SCSI card for my old scanner, 256 MB more RAM and a Mitsubishi 19" NF monitor. I use it for 3-D modeling, editing and some Photoshop. So that was the route I took and I am very happy with my decision. Depending on what you need, you may want to do something similar.
Pretty sweet huh? This is a difficult switch for me because I have been a long time Mac basher. I've always been a PC geek, having built systems for businesses, configured some NT networks, dabbled in hardcore gaming, over-clocked processors, you name it, I've done it. Yet in spite of my persistent talking smack about the Mac, I've suddenly been bitten by the Aqua bug. It has a certain aesthetic appeal to my artistic nature. I love finely engineered stylish computing designs; the Palm V, Jornada 540 series, PowerMac G4, Sony Vaio (well, some of the Vaios), PowerBook, Cobalt Cube, IBM ThinkPad, just to name a few. There is something to be said for the blending of art and technology, which seems to be where the Mac fits in. Needless to say, I finally "get it".
But I should note that in no way am I getting out PCs. In fact I will still continue to happily use my DELL desktop, and my Gateway Solo portable. I will simply be adding a G4 to my motley array of systems. In my line of work, it is essential that I have a background in both platforms. I never really believed that before, but it is becoming more apparent.
