This morning I was picking up some stuff at WalMart, and just happened to see a buggy with some items to be put out on the shelves. Among those items were 4 Visor Graphites. Only the 2meg version, but still. Anyone know how much Visor gear WalMart will be stocking?

I saw some Visor VDX and the 2meg Visor at Walmart in Beaumont,Tx. They also had some serial cradles in stock. Did not see the VPR or VPL.

Unbelievable!

Really? I'm not interested in a 2Mb Visor right now but I'm very curious as to what they were selling for. Is any of the Handspring stuff at "falling prices" discount?

Ugh. Walmart? What is Handspring thinking? Don't they realize part of the appeal of the Visor is it's 'geek-chic' feel?

Selling it at Target makes perfect sense. Selling it at Walmart doesn't.

Walmart Web site

Not at my local walmart, but lots of Handspring on Walmart.com, revised web site, at a few pennies discount...

I'm not really into image...but 'Wal-mart' and 'Handspring' shouldn't be in the same sentence. There is that connotation of...dare I say it...CHEAP.

Why not? Where are you going to buy that Prism recharger at 2 in the morning when you're battery's almost dead? It's easier to find a Wal-mart than a Best Buy or CompUSA.

Well, the Wal-Mart's here are open in Arizona 24 hours.

I think it's more important that they carry the handspring wherever they can. The "Chic" argument doesn't carry much weight.

Imagine you are out in the middle of cross country road trip, you can find a wal-mart anywhere...CompUSA is probably not that common in the boondocks.

The more popular this item becomes the better...more accessories, more software, more everything.

I found some $30-at-BestBuy software for $20 at Walmart last week. If they knock $50 off the Prism price I'll gladly surrender any geek-chic status I've got...

(They probably figure the chic geeks don't go to WalMart in the first place. What the Target-goers don't know won't hurt 'em....)

Why care where it comes from!

I'm all for MORE retail stores having Visors to sell. With only one source in my town I had the choice of buying from Staples local or several places on the web.

Staples didn't feel there was any local competition. My usual "Will you match (Any-Mart's) $30 lower price?" tactic didn't work, since at that time no one else in town carried Visors.

Yes, I could buy off the web and actually save about $20 simply by not paying any sales tax (or shipping..it was free). But by buying local you can actually inspect the Visor before leaving the store. You can take it back for an exchange or refund if you find something wrong in the first 15 or 30 days, depending on the store.

Say "thanks!" to Handspring for letting Walmart sell their product. At worst it'll lower the "nerd" appeal. At best it'll lower the price. The lower the price, the more people will have them. The more that have them, the greater a market there is for springboard developers. The great a market for springboards there is, the more springboards we'll see.

Well homer, while that may be the case, Handspring is being pretty clever about releasing their Visors to the mass consumer this way. By doing this they are trying to differentiate themselves from the "computer snobbery" label.

Personally, I would've started selling the 2Mb versions at Costco instead... you'd also get the big families and small office crowds.

Nothing as neat and tidy as Wal-Mart the day after Christmas. It's a scary place.... [although the Kathie Lee line of clothing, unbelievable as it is, is actually quite nice. heh heh]

Oh, one more thing. Those of us who live in a metropolitan area tend to pooh-pooh Wal-Mart as some sort of trailer mecca, but there are many rural areas in the country where it's the only place where you can buy a lot of stuff. I remember when I used to live in Texas, that it was the most convenient place for me to shop for everything all at once, at a good price. If you go around dinner time or later when the kids are home for dinner, it's usually less hectic.

One more advantage of purchasing your Visor at Wal-Mart -- Wal-Mart has an EXCEPTIONALLY liberal return policy. None of this 15% restocking fee like you'd find at CompUSA. You don't even have to return it to the SAME Wal-Mart. As long as the company carries it, you can return your merchandise to any other Wal-Mart for credit, or a refund in cash.

Well, trailer trash or not, I was going to have to wait for a serial cradle that I needed to work with Intellisync to work its way through someone's order and shipment process. Instead, I was able to pick the sucker up on my lunch hour.

And the remark about Wal Mart's liberal return policy is oh so very true.

Jeez, don't you want something if it's sold more than a block from Sak's?

Walmart sells Cannon, Minolta, and Pentax cameras as well as HP computers and such. I think the Handspring line fits right in. Besides, they are everywhere, and many are open round the clock.

The one closest to me had a bunch of Visor stuff including Day Timer/PDA combos, and the prices were slightly below normal (a few bucks).

So between Best Buy, Walmart, and Staples, I am in paradise. :^)
