Good point. Instead of competing in the market they helped create and knew backwards and forwards, Hawkins and Dubinsky have chosen to enter into a market they know little about, orders of magnitude more competitive, with even lower per unit returns. To date their adventure in telephony has netted them a considerable drop in unit sales.

Good thing they no longer face the Palm OS competition directly. Oops! Isn't that Sony-Erricson leading the wireless phone world?

Err.. by shifting most of Handspring's previous customers over to Sony?

True..but the customers shifting over to Sony is not the customers that Handspring is looking for today.

Ultimately, I see the Treo as little more than a trendy fad.. I don't want my handheld and cell phone integrated into one device anymore than I want my cd player, dvd player, pvr and vcr integrated with my receiver and other audio equipment.. I prefer to mix and match the "best of breed" for each device type, not to mention replacement or upgrading of a particular device if one part goes bad or becomes defective, stolen, lost, with a treo type device you potentially lose use of both devices in that case.

Is there a market for Treo type devices, yes, but compared to the size of the market for hand helds its relatively tiny and it's a limited consumer base.. Does it make sense to add some/like hand held type capability to a cell phone , yes, however I would prefer to see improved connectivity, compatibility and data exchange between these (separate) devices rather than have them combined into one..

I think we can all take a look at the total Treo Comms shipped and the total Treos sold..

Shipped = 93,000

Sold = Over 40,000

Even the person with the worse math can tell that whatever that is sold is less than half of the Treos shipped!

However, is 40,000 units a good number for Handspring or not? I think it's a bit dissappointing compared to what they shipped.

If you would have read the full story you would have seen:
"The main reason for the large shipping versus sale discrepancy is that the Treo 270 is currently in transition to the retail channel. "

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

Aaaaaaaahhh. Well that clears everything up. Perhaps they should just post the statistics some time after that. How about those that are NOT in transition compared to those sold?
