Question

I would like to start a survey of sorts with owners of HandyGPS units. It is my belief that there are two sets of units out there. One set that works fine/great and the owners are happy with them. Another set where the unit works once in a while, but can often take many minutes to get a position fix, and also will lock-up the Visor randomly. I would just like to know how many of each there are.

To start this off I am in the "not-working group." Although I can get a position fix sometimes, it is very flaky and I have experienced several lock-ups that required soft resets.

Thanks in advance for your participation,
Ryan

Hi,

Thank you for your prompt response. I completely understand that things like this happen time to time. I would just like to make this exchange as quickly and hassle-free as possible. Please tell me what I need to do to
exhange my unit for a new one.

Do I need a Return Authorization Number? What address should I send it to? Do you need to receive my unit before you can send a new one out to me? What about shipping and handling charges?

Thank you in advance,
XXXXXXX

Dear Mr. XXXXX,

We apologize for the difficulty you are having with our unit. We have had isolated instances of the unit locking up with certain Handspring Visor units. We recommend that you return the product to us so that we may send you a replacement.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Subject: Unit not working...please help!

Hi,

I received my unit about a week ago and have spent many hours trying to
get it to work but I've come across several problems. They are:

1) Unit is unable to acquire satellite tracking (even after several minutes, up to 15 minutes), and rarely does it ever pick up ONE satellite to acquire the correct time.
2) EVERYTIME I initiate a Cold Start, my Visor locks up (time display freezes and the unit does not respond) and forces me to reset my Visor.

The following corrective actions have been tried with no positive results:

1) Installed brand new batteries in both the Visor and GPS units and made sure they are aligned correctly.
2) Disabled all hacks (even once, I did a hard reset on my visor to make sure it wasn't any other programs interferring with the GPS unit).
3) Unit is inserted properly and initializes.
4) Unit has a clear view of the sky with no obstructions, whatsoever.
5) Mapping software runs properly without the unit.
6) My visor does not have the DRAM problem.

Any help from you would be greatly appreciated. I've been anticipating the release of this product for a long time and am still excited about its potential. I believe I have a defective unit and would like to request an exchange. Please contact me as to what needs to be done.

Thank you in advance,
XXXXXXXX

on another note, i don't think i should pay any additional shipping and handling charges to send the unit back since my unit is defective and i am exchanging it, not returning it for a refund.

I must be one of the lucky ones. My unit has worked with no problems.

i just received word from them that they are offering me a refund if i want one.

i am now SERIOUSLY looking into buying a stand-alone and creating a serial connector like one of the users here.

That bites!!! :O

Did they give any indication when something would be available?

I wonder if they are running into a component shortage (flash memory) that may be hindering their ability to produce.

If you do make the serial connector, can you make 2 of them, I'm thinkin gof getting a standalone too...

I'm thinking of the Garmin GPSIII(+) of the Garmin Emap...
Those have mapping software buildin so I don't NEED my Visor, but I still can...

Also I need one with Australian maps (and pref. also european maps...)

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?
