Thumbs up

So far on my PRISM I have noticed:

- my graffiti is just about the same as my VDX,
- speed with Handspring modem and mail is much faster,
- no unusual wear to the finish, just a couple of shiny marks from keyboard or case,
- the fit/finish of buttons and screen are tight,
- the case is more solid - can't flex it like I could the VDX,
- all of the potentially fragile areas near springboard slot, screen and buttons are reinforced,
- I'm using the unit too much to get a good read on the longevity of a full charge. I just let it trickle charge overnight,
- hotsyncs seem marginally faster.

Wow...so one actually exists out there ;-) Kinda reminds me of the search for the golden wrapper in Willie Wonka chocolate bars!

Anyway, when did you order/receive, and did you have one prior that you returned? Curious if there is a fresh batch out of the oven...

Pick of the litter?

Actually I went through four Visor Deluxes over the past year so I'm not one to put up with much bs. I bought one of the first VDX and now one of the first PRISMs (received a week-and-a-half ago). I doubt that they picked one out specially for me.

I'm pleased with the design changes they've made over the year to get to the PRISM. While I'm sure there will be poorly assembled units, flawed chips, and corrupt software hitting the shelves, my unit exhibits good design and is running solid.

My Prism is defect-free, as is the one my buddy has. We both ordered ours the first day they were available. I had some weird problems at first, but they were attributed to some files left over from my Deluxe in my hotsync backup folder; once I cleaned that folder out it's worked perfectly.

The readability in low-light conditions is reason enough to buy a Prism. I will never own another monochrome PDA (yuck)!

Me, too...

Count me as another one with a "good" Prism. I ordered it last Monday morning and received it from Handspring via FedEx on Tuesday morning. The graffiti is fine, the unit is solid, the Palm IIIc WriteRights fit well enough for a job of this magnitude, and I transferred my info from my VDX with only minimal hassles (a couple apps aren't very Prism friendly yet).

Cool

You can add me to the 'good' Prism brigade. Got two of them and both are perfect. I did have some initial problems, but I've removed some 'rouge' software and all is well.

Question

I've noticed several posts in this thread that mention your Prism(s) works fine after removing certain apps. Curious...did any of you have the graffiti issue prior to deleting apps? If so, what apps did you do away with? Just trying to establish a pattern, if any (I know, its a stretch, but when all else fails...)

Thumbs up Mine's fine, too

No problems here once I digitized again. I'm extremely happy with my Prism, which is my third PDA after starting with the Palm Professional and moving to the Palm IIIx.

No problems on mine either. I didn't use the Backup module to restore my information into the Prism - instead I made sure I deleted all suspicious and potentially conflicting PRC files from my BAckup folder and then HotSynced the info into the Prism. After that, I beamed all other apps back into the Prism with my Visor Deluxe.

Thumbs up

Just wanted to add my positive experience upgrading from a VDX to Prism. I ordered my Prism the first week they were available, and it arrived a couple of day later. After reading some of the problems with restoring from the Backup Module, I chose to beam my apps from VDX to Prism. This avoided any conflicts and weeded out some of the lesser used programs. After the first week of some minor Graffiti woes, I am not having any problems, and I am very happy with the unit. I am also using the WriteRite for color devices. A friend bought my old VDX and is now a happy member of the Handspring family.

Arrow Why?

Why were people waiting this long to declare that their Prisms are OK? People were losing confidence in HS and the VPr because of all the complaints about graffiti etc. We need posts that are both positive and negative.

Mine's good, too. I had a couple of graffiti concerns at the beginning, but they've worked themselves out. All my apps and hacks work as well as on my vdx and the color apps are grand.

You know, mine has been flawless too.
Earlier, I posted that I was planning to return it due to cost and a general lack of impressivity (is that a word?)
However, I've since been converted, and I think it's a keeper. The fact that my transition to it was so trouble-free was a big factor.

Anyway, Graffiti has been great, no battery issues, and only one stuck yellow pixel near the bottom center.
However, all else is great!

I've even bought a flash module and stowaway since (sure drives up the price though!!)

Regards,
Mark

The bottom line is that the PRISM IS a lot of money, it is an early-generation product and we do demand good design and functionality. Is it worth $449? Well, at this place in time it may be because there are plenty of competitors challenging it.

One of these days a $100 PDA will be the enabler for hooking us into the service and support of a wireless ISP. Recurring costs, optional services and support is where the real money is. All of the smallish companies like Handspring are building the hardware, protocols and infrastructure to make it happen. Soon they'll start converging and the fun will really begin. In the meantime I'm paying a lot of money to be a gamma tester. Whatever!

Cool

Here's yet another trouble-free Prism.

The only actual problem I have is sometimes it doesn't recognize a Graffiti letter "O".

Of course I had to upgrade some of my apps to work in color, but that is to be expected.

Otherwise, this is one spiffy machine.

Grafitti O's

Winchell, have you tried making your O's backwards? I'm a lefty, so I tend to write some letters differently than a righty. I found my new Prism wouldn't recognize an O the way I had been drawing it, but when I made the circle in the other direction, it recognized it without any trouble.

Angry Bad Luck Prism

Ok maybe I haven't had that good of luck.
My first prism had a pixel problem with one that was dead center in the screen, always being blue (EXTREMELY annoying in Zap 2016) and it had a problem with a stall every 4 seconds. It would have a little half a second freeze (Very annoying in action games and drawing programs)

SO I got a Replacement, Which just happened to have a digitizer problem. It would take, on average, 3 tries just to write one letter and when drawing it would jump around the screen, and Oh my gosh talk about bad This constrained me from all of my SimCity NEEDS. I NEED to play SimCity!! Were talking a life and death situation here. What am I supposed to do next weekend in drivers ED class? Sit there and....Learn?? AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I'd rather have the one with the bad pixle.

Anyways, I am getting another new one. Who knows what misfortune this one will hold.
