I haven't seen this discussed before so I thought I would share my experience.

Since I first got the Visor I noticed that I do not have to do resets very often. Unlike most comments I read here where people have to do resets all the time. I had maybe 3 resets in the first 5 months and 2 of them where due to removing hacks.

Recently I have had lots of resets and problems with hotsyncing which required a soft reset to get going. I probably had 10 resets in 2 weeks.

I download ebooks and have lots of Avantgo channels so I figured that the system needed a good cleaning.

I synced and then HARD reset the Visor following the online PDF instructions provided by Handspring.

Tip#1 Before you recover you should go into your BACKUP directory and delete all programs and databases that you KNOW you do not need. It tried to reload every database I ever had.

Tip#2 After the first hotsync that restores the databases do another normal hotsync to get your data in sync. I was upset that I lost all my calendar entries until I did this.

So far, so good. 2 days without a reset and my Visor feels clean and springtime fresh.

For those of you NOT using any type of backup solution (Backup module, BackupBuddy, or any other backup app), don't do a HARD reset unless you backup everything first! By default, HotSync does not backup (most) 3rd party apps... it only backs up data files.

As for Tip #1 above, BackupBuddy takes care of this for you by moving unused apps and data files to an Archive directory. The module backs up what is currently on the Visor at the time the backup is made. Those old databases should not be there as they would have been removed when the app was.
