Question

Okay, I know that this question has found its way into various other threads, but I'm getting dizzy trying to synthesize the information from different places and times. Also there have been updates that make the earlier threads somewhat obsolete.

So, here's the question (leaving out Memplug and the 8 and 16 mb flash modules), where do people stand on Matchbook Drive vs. Innopocket vs. Nxist? (Since PalmGear continues to be disingenuous about the Memplug, I guess I'm going to give up on that option and go CF.)

Before you answer, note that Kopsis has "released" a beta version of their FAFileMover (1.3) that has added the concept of plug-ins so developers can more easily adapt their programs to access information on the CF. Kopsis is also providing a modified version of CSpotRun that can access docs from the CF. Here's a quote from Kessler's post to the FlashAdapter Forum this morning.

"So what's new with 1.3.0? Well, FAFileMover now supports "plug-in" applications. We mentioned that we were working on this in a previous message, but for those that missed it, a plug-in is just a way to launch an application from within FAFileMover and "give it" the currently selected file.

Currently only one plug-in is included, but it's a good one! We've modified the CSpotRun doc reader to be able to read doc files *directly* off the CF card and we're including a plug-in that launches CSpotRun in that special mode. There's a lot more detail in the release notes included in the ZIP file so check it out."

For CF I think Innopocket is better.
Anyway, I just try the FAFileMover ver 1.3, and it's rock!
now my innopocket have the same capability with my memplug, for reading a doc!

Nxist was supposed to start shipping by the end of April but as far as I know, no one has yet laid hands on one of their modules (I'd expect them to have prototypes in the hands of reviewers by now if they were anywhere near shipping).

Innopocket and Matchbook both have excellent products - each with their own strengths. And if plug-and-play is important to you, a plug-and-play CF adapter running our (Kopsis) software will be available soon (though it will probably be more expensive than current adapters). I have a prototype in my Visor right now and it's working great!

Thanks for the info, Dave. Just as I was ready to buy a CF adapter

I know you aren't producing the Adapter, but can you give me any idea of what you meant by "soon?"

Thanks again

Question

Just out of interest, do Mr Kessler, do you usually e-mail registered users of FA filemover informing them of updates? I Only just found out about the last release (1.2)cos I remembered decided to check your website. Great work on the software though

No, unfortunately I haven't yet been given a release date from the vendor. Hardware production depends on so many non-technical issues (component shippments, production line startup issues, packaging, marketing, etc.) that I wouldn't even dare to speculate. But the prototypes I have are fully functional and the memory expansion market is currently very competitive and moving very rapidly - so you can bet the vendor will be bending over backwards to get the new adapter out ASAP.

No, Kopsis respects the privacy of our customers and does not send any unsolicited email. You can voluntarily subscribe to our announcements mailing list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flashadapter-info/join to receive announcments of new products and new stable releases of existing products.

Kinda figured that would be your answer. Well, I guess I'll just have to wait patiently. I've made it a year without, a little longer shouldn't kill me.

Thumbs up

FAFilemover also works on IBM CF harddrive. (with power adapter) Now there is API (plug-in) for apps to read and write CF Drive. What is it called? KS-DOS?

I can see Kopsis becoming MS for CF adapter.

I got a Innopocket CF adaptor, does that mean I have to get another adaptor to make an autofile mover work when it is eventually available? (Will it ever be available?), How are Plug and Play CF adopter different from the current adaptors?

The adapter you have is all you need. The only difference between the current and the plug&play adapters is that the plug&play come with a little memory built in, on which is the Kopsis software. They use the same software you are using, they just happen to keep it on the adapter instead of on the Visor itself.
It's kind of like the Handspring 8mg Flash module. Whenever I plug it in, there is an application loaded on my Visor (but stored on the module) called File Mover that allows me to move files back and forth between the Visor and the module. If it were more like the adapter you have, then I would have to keep the software in my Visor's memory. Hope I confused the heck out-a-ya.

I thought version 1.2 is the latest? Did I (a registered user) miss an announcement?

1.3.1 is still in beta. I think Kopsis plans to release it soon. I recommend you download it and install it from here

Cool MemPlug 'AutoCF'

Hey guys. Why bother with CF solutions. I heard that MemPlug's 'AutoCF' (I don't have the offical name) will be ready very soon. A friend of mine was chosen as one of the beta testers. He said that the software is a majic and it basically turns the SmartMedia Card memory into your Visors internal memory. He has over 30MB of apps and databases at his launcher it includes 30MB of TR reference documents, another 10MB of WordSmith doc, 30 games and Noah Lite dictionary (full version) ....

MemPlug (more info)

I also heard that the backorder of MemPlug @ Palmgear will go away very soon since they just did a big shipment to PG.
Also, MemPlug will be available in major retail stores very soon.

Question

philip,

Since the letters N, D, and A don't appear to be in your friend's alphabet , can you tell us what the 8/16 MB flash module is for? If you don't know what I'm talking about, nevermind.

Arrow Be Wary

I am wary of this Philip guy. He just signed up on the boards and all he si talking about is the "New" MemPLug and how good it is. Could he be working for the MemPlug people in any way? He reminds of the Pump and Dumpers on Stock boards.

I realize we need to be vigilant but let's not repeat the mistake of unfairly hazing new members simply because we *suspect* they may be PR plants. He may simply be someone who's excited because he thinks he may have some inside info. PI Technologies doesn't need to resort to such crude self-promotion. My vibe is that there are generally warm feelings toward PI Tech here at VC, though they have become somewhat tarnished by their association with Palmgear. As for the beta test and talk of "AutoCF" for the MemPlug, this is in line with the email PI Tech sent to me and, I assume, all registered MemPlug-owners to beta test some software, though they didn't mention what it was. As for the new design, PiDeveloper has confirmed that there is a new design and a fellow VC'er posted a picture of the supposed "new" MemPlug. So let's please cut the guy some slack for now.

Okay, so we've got info on the beta software and the new design. But what I'm really interested in was the statement about retail availability. Anybody...?
