Wink New Product Announcements

I'm wondering if there will be any new HandSpring product announcements within the next week.

We are at the 1 year anniversary of the Prism

The Prism price has recently dropped

HandSpring earnings call will be Oct 17th, I'm sure they will be wanting to bolster some support in light of the weak year

They are dumping visorphones for free now (with plan)

We know the Treo products must be close at hand if there is FCC activity

It's time to get the x-mas line-up available

What is your best guess ?

I was at one of the chain office supply stores today while a friend bought a Prism for her husband. The salesperson said their store had already ordered the new product from Handspring and expected it at the beginning of the month. Priced around $500.

Don't know how much it's worth...but I thought I'd throw it out there!

$500? Sounds like a new top of the line unit! Sweet!

My CompUSA is completely out of Prisms and he said he does not expect they are getting anymore.

I expect the delay came from HS having to entirely redesign the new device. I don't think they'd risk poor sales by making an edge with a color screen.

Is this going to be the Treo? That unit had a near-announcment experience before getting sidetracked by FCC red tape.

What red tape are you talking about? They changed the status from Granted to Pending at Handspring's request.

The Treo doesn't seem like the perfect x-mas present.

If Handspring come up with a worthwhile color device, to replace my Prism, I'll buy it. I really do not think that a color edge would be a worthwhile purchase though -- a new high-end device needs a lot more features than the Edge + color would offer.

Edge + color + 16 megs of RAM?

What if *cough pipe dream cough* they also add a SD slot in addition to the Edge connector? Thin form, multiple expansion options, color, and extra RAM. Make the screen even marginally better, and I think you've got the best all around device out there (assuming you can make it sig. smaller than the Clie)

And I thought that Handspring requested this because of some problems with the application process for FCC approval. I could be all wrong about that -- that sort of bureaucratic stuff makes my head spin.

I think they did this because when a request has been approved it is a public record and anyone can see it. With a pending status it is not a public record. So when they listed it as granted it let the proverbial cat out of the bag on what Handspring was working on.

Of course I might be wrong, but that was the jist I got from discussions I read when this happened.

And I for one hope that the rumors become true. The last two devices HS has released was less than stellar. I hope they provide a new color device, 16MB, High-Res screen with on-board SpringBoard with smaller form factor. If not, looks like Sony will be getting a new customer... Although I would prefer to stay with HS, not if they can't remain innovative. In my opinion, since the Prism release last year, newer models haven't come close to my expectations (which are quite realistic and were a year ago). Just my opinion... Come'on HS, let's see whatcha got!!! Make us proud

Announcement soon

Looks like there will be an announcement on Monday of the wireless Treo devices but not necessarily availability at that time. Look closely at this article, as it describes the possibility of a later release of Color Treo !!!!!

Treo Announcement !!!!

From the article:

"Company representatives have acknowledged that sales of the device [visorphone] didn't live up to expectations."

personally i think the marketing behind the VP was dreadful. things been out almost a year and is still not available for a good price without a service plan.

if they pull this stunt with the treo, i'll probably jump ship with my next upgrade. i'm in canada, and though i'd love to stay with HS, they don't seem to care about the market here. if treo is marketed like a cellphone instead of a pda, i'll head for sony if/when i upgrade.

and as i say that, it's kind of funny. cause if the treo is available here immediately i'll upgrade then. but if not, i won't likely upgrade till the end of spring/start of summer 2002. my pda suits me just fine. but i need a cell phone. i'd like to get them in one unit. if i can't, i'll just get a sep phone and upgrade to a color pda when they're cheaper next year.

I think the Treo looks like great functionality. I think the VisorPhone was HS learning experience into the wireless market. These Treo devices clearly are a bigger step of integration toward wireless and with the keyboard will be a step toward the BlackBerry market. I would expect the GPRS always on support as a follow-on. There was also mention of color follow-on. This looks like the device I have been waiting for.

Arrow 16 MB RAM

Did anyone notice that the Treos will have 16 MB or RAM? Sweet!! Hope they are available in Canada when they are released too. Although now I am hesitant after hearing about the color one in development.

Really? I beg to differ. They are cool devices for folks that love their monochromes. In terms of quality and workmanship, the lack of serious problems reported is testament to how solid they are.
