The car allows us the 'freedom' to live far away from work. After all, who wants to live near their business- all that traffic, noise, pollution, and concrete- no trees or grass. Yuk.
Don't forget the people. I lived in a trailer park for a few years where my neighbors were less than 6 feet away. It was great listening to them scream at each other at 2 AM when I knew I had to get up at 5.
You can say what you want about urban living, but given that my neighbors are now more like 60 yards away, I'll take living in the 'burbs over the "close knit urban neighborhood", thank you.

I love the convenience of driving, and Omaha is too hilly for most of us to easily bike commute, but I often wish they would quadruple gas prices and 'dethrone' cars from being such a major part of our lives and society!
Ride a motorcycle. Almost the same effect as a car with less resources used. Since I got my motorcycle license my pickup sits in the garage unless the weather's terrible or I need to haul something big, and I'm working on the terrible weather part.
