Question

Is there a technological reason why, or was it just some kooky design aesthetic? I'm curious as to why they couldn't keep the button on the left, as with all the other models. Looking at Incipio's Web site about its PDA cases, I saw a note saying that Prism owners couldn't use the regular Visor snap-on cases. I suspect it's because the position of the button probably causes it to be pushed inadvertently when the cases are closed. What a bummer.

Anyone know?

"the power button has been moved to the right side of the prism because the light tube is on the left side -- keeping the power button on the left would have increased the prism's size."

The snap-on cases are incompatible because the extra 3mm thickness of the Prism prevents the snap-on lid from fitting onto the back of the unit.

Does anyone know why they didn't just put the light tube on the right and leave the power button on the left? That would seem to me to be a more subtle and consistent (with other Palm OS devices) solution. I wouldn't expect it the difference to be obvious, but maybe that's an error on my part.

It is my understanding that the light tubes are integral parts of the screens. As Handspring purchases these from an outside source, moving the light tube is not an option.

Wow Usonian -- this is just the information I needed, too! Thank you very much. Now I know now to get the wrong model case.

Ok, that makes sense. And a custom screen would hike the price too much, since LCD screens are such a high-demand item.

I did wonder for a moment how the Palm IIIc, though, can use the same screen (the same physical screen--the difference in number of colors is in the OS, just in case anyone hadn't read yet that somewhere else, like James's review) and still have its power button on the left. Obviously, though, since the IIIc is longer than the typical Palm OS handheld--i.e. the Prism--it doesn't

Anyone want me to point out something else that's blatantly obvious? No? Ok, enough then.
