Are Prism 16MB Memory Upgrades Reliable?

I'm contemplating upgrading one of my Prisms to 16MB. I understand that one or two vendors provide the upgrade service, with prices ranging from $49 (Ebay seller) to $99.95 (www.stnecorp.com). Thus far, I am inclined to go with STNE, as their website leaves me with a favorable impression of them. Before I take the plunge, I'd like some more information, apart from what the vendors say about themselves.

What's the word about the upgrade vendors? Who are they, and how are they for service and quality of work?

For those of you who have upgraded your Prisms, are the upgrades working well?

Thanks for any responses and advice.

Anthony

Anthony, I had my prism upgraded in Jan of 2001, in Hong Kong, by some guy in a closet with a soldering iron (not that bad, but almost). Cost me 400 HKD, never had a problem with it. I was nervous as all-get-out, but it's worked great. Sorry I don't have any experience with anyone closer.

I can't speak to a Prism upgrade, but I did have my Edge upgraded to 16 Mb 2 months ago by STNE. They did a terrific job. I can't even tell that they opened the unit at all. I shipped it to them on a Friday and had it back the following Thursday. The only problem with the upgrade I've had so far is deciding what to fill all that room with.

I figure a Prism upgrade should work the same. Give it a try.

Mike

the URL is as follows: http://www.palmpilotupgrade.com/about.html

I think he advertised a $49.95 price on ebay, probably to spread the word about his business. The price on his website is $99 for a 16MB Prism memory upgrade.

You might also look at the following URL: http://www.stnecorp.com. Stne Corp's price is $99.95.

$99 plus, may sound steep for a memory upgrade, but consider that an 8MB (removable) Flash Module will run about $40 or more on ebay, and even more in a retail outlet. How much better to have 16MB installed.

I will do business with Stne Corp. I have not sent my Prism in to them; nonetheless; I plan to do so. I think their testimonials read quite well.

Thumbs up palmpilotupgrade is TOPS!

Palmpilotupgrade is tops. I had my prism upgraded ages ago and it has been perfect. I even picked up another Prism with a 16mb upgrade by Tony Rudenko (palpilotupgrade) to have as a spare. I have yet to see another model that is as good as my 16mb prism. I use it with the VisorPhone and couldn't be happier.

I highly recommend the service.

I second this. Just recently upgraded my Prism to 16Mb. I had my Platinum upgraded to 16Mb in March 2002, and never looked towards anyone else for my upgrade needs. Tony's work (Palmpilotupgrade) is top-notch and you won't be disappointed in his professionalism and service. Most highly recommended!

Thanks so much for the replies and information. The praise you all have provided for the work of both STNEcorp.com and palmpilotupgrade.com is well taken and highly appreciated.

I have been 100% satisfied with Tony Rudenko's upgrade of my Prism to 16MB.

Would do it again if I have to replace my Prism.

Does the opening of the Prism for the memory upgrade effect Handspring's one-year warranty? In other words, does the opening of the Prism for the memory upgrade work void Handspring's one-year warranty?

If anyone knows, what do Tony Rudenko and STNE Corp., say about the effect, if any, of their work on the Handspring warranty?

Just to set the record straight -

I never sold or advertised ANYTHING on Ebay. The only upgrade I offer for $49 is the do-it-yourself kit for IPAQ Compaq (again, NOT on Ebay).
Also, there is no need for me to "spread the word" - I developed this particular upgrade myself and introduced it (first in the US) on February 14th 2000.

Regards,
Tony Rudenko

Tony Rudenko did mine. There was a minor installation problem. He corrected it immediately and courteously. Since I got up and running, it has been flawless. I highly recommend him.
