Question Moving programs/files from one Visor to another

Howdy,
I own a Visor Deluxe, and am getting a Prism later this week.
My question is - does anyone know any tips/tricks to moving all my data from one to the other.

I figure I'll have to reinstall my applications, but I'm wondering if I have the same username, if i can just sync to my old files, and have it work.

If not, my plan is this:
I'll just backup my existing palm onto the pc
Double click all the files, and then sync to the new one.
Anything that doesn't come in that way, I'll beam across.

Any pointers, horror stories, or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
jaider

If you're using the latest Desktop software and HotSync Manager, you should be able to sync the Deluxe to back it up, and then sync the Prism to the same username (just don't use the Deluxe with that username anymore).

If you installed the Handspring Visor Deluxe updater, you'll want to make sure it doesn't get transferred to the Prism. Also, you may want to review your software apps for anything that's not supported by the newer OS 3.5 of the Prism.

Thanks Mark. It sounds almost tooooo easy. It also sounds crazy enough it just might work. Where would be the best place to check for 3.5 compatibility? I mostly use Qvadis Express Reader, QuickWord, and TinySheet. The rest of the stuff is pretty trivial (read GAMES).

thanks for the help!

I went from a VDx to a Platinum and found that it is necessary NOT to sync the unsaved_preferences.prc. I also think there is a problem with the Saved_preferences.prc. These are easily reset on the Visor anyway.

By default, Unsaved_Preferences doesn't even get backed up, so it shouldn't restore. Saved_Preferences contains, among other things, most commercial application registration codes, etc. There should be no problem restoring it during an upgrade.

Talking Just to close the loop

So,
I synced it last night. I ignored the preferences files completely, and just cleaned out the hsupdater file.
it synced to my last backup, so i missed a few doc files, which i just beamed across.
Plus, I beamed the category "all" of my contacts, and got those too.

So, it was pretty darn slick- and i encountered no problems at all.
AvantGo and AlbumtoGo had to be reinstalled, but everything else worked great.

Thanks for the tips!

So, I'm considering upgrading from my VDx to a VPl. My question (very similar to jaider26's question) is:

If I use my backup module to move everything from the VDx to the VPl, might I encounter any problems? Is it possible to do this, or should I do the setup of the new Visor using HotSync? (Because it just seems like it would be so much easier to snap in my backup module and restore...)

As stated above, if you have the HS Updater installed on the VDx, remove it (warm reset, then delete HS_Ext_1_0_3.PRC), do a backup to the module, then restore to the VPl.
