Bluetooth is going to do nothing of the kind. Certainly not now, and probably not anytime in the near future. First there are the interoperability problems with the 1.0 spec (that covers the stuff that will be shipping in the next six to 12 months). The 1.1 spec isn't due to be finalized until later this year; and, even then, it is far from a mature spec. Second, the software for pass-thru ethernet via Bluetooth is non-existent (maybe in a lab somewhere, but that is it). Third, where is the infrastructure to support such a concept? You'd have to have more than 25 ethernet-to-bluetooth devices just to cover a 100 square meter area!! Even wireless ethernet is not a feasible alternative to the various digital cell networks . . .
That said, your idea of using a PDA to access ASP offerings was/is being actively developed by many "new economy" companies. Examples of first generation sync-based Palm ASPs include AvantGo and Palm's MyPalm service. You'd like to see a subsequent generation of products that interoperate either on remote servers and/or with your PDA. Sadly, this truely great idea is more than alittle out there; and it is probably going to be realized on the CE platform first. Why? Because your idea is exactly the sort of thing that Microsoft wants to do with their .NET initiative. I'm sure that Palm wants to get there eventually, but their zen is getting in the way . . .
Now that I think about it, there is a Citrix ICA client for CE devices . . . so they already can run Windows 2000 applications as a remote terminal with a very teeny tiny screen.
