wait a minute...

This news might not be to exciting for most Visor owners, but for me it's a different story. I received a Visor Solo for my birthday 2 summers ago and am now currently looking for another Visor. I think these handhelds are just what I needed...and maybe for the masses who have not owned a handheld yet it's the same thing for them also. I don't know. I like the fast lookup feature, which I thought was one of the best things going for the Edge. I would definitely use this feature...no doubt about it. I also like the silent alarm. For me right now, being a student...I just can't afford to buy a color device because that means I'd have to shell out at least $400. Besides I really don't need color. It would be nice...don't get me wrong, but for some people it's just not a necessity. The Pro looks nice with the 16 mb, but that, too, might be a little too much for my student assistant income. Right now my memory is maxed on my Solo, because I'm using more than 500 K for Wordsmith and associated docs alone. Plus I have 4.0 Student for classes which is taking around 200 K and I've only begun to write all my assignments. For the Visor Solo...apps add up and I find myself basically with no memory. These handhelds would also be nice, since I could use my keyboard (which I think is one of the main reasons why the Edge didn't do so well).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm definitely looking at buying either the Neo or Pro and I just wanted to let some people know that I personally think that these handhelds are not geared for those Prism and Platinum owners but for those people that find themselves in a similar situation as me.

I do have a few questions though. With an internal 16 mb Visor would one need to buy a new backup module...instead of those on the market right now?

Also, for the Neo's- aren't the batteries going to drain faster when one uses the silent alarm alot?

Any comments would be great. Thanks

Mike

Well, handspring has a 16MB module for only $60 which you could use to back up, but I would guess that HS would make a new one. The 8MB backup module wouldn't work.

About the silent alarm/battery drain, I would assume yes, but not too much.

I doubt it will be noticable. LEDs use very little current.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for defending these, Mike. Everyone is coming down pretty hard on these new Visors and on Handspring in general. While I can't say that I'd buy one of these, since my Deluxe does just fine for me, I know that there are plenty of people for whom these two devices are the right choice.

I'll admit, I'm holding out for a higher end device that is a greater improvement on what I have now, but by no means am I bitter that the ones soon to be released are not that device. OK, so they're not a giant leap from what's currently available. You get that Neo. You will love having 4 times as much memory. You even get a faster processor and a silent alarm in the bargain. I must admit, while Graphite is still my fave for matching modules well, I do like the new colors better than the old Deluxe clear colors.
