XP and PD install - making it go smoothly

Have any of you noticed that Palm Desktop installs fine on a from scratch XP install but has problems when you upgraded from Windows 95/98 family?

It looks to me like MS did some funky stuff with the XP upgrade as you might expect. When I did a full XP install and removed the old 95/98SE stuff, my PD install worked perfectly.

Perhaps this relates to the fact that XP is NT family and if you already have the w95/98 registry stuff for the USB drivers installed, XP has problems converting the driver over to the NT style.

I also noticed in my fooling with the Palm Desktop installer that it really needs to be the only thing running at the time of install on your PC. I killed a bunch of background items (services) in addition to the apps in the alt-tab list.
