Way to go, Handspring!!! Number 1 in retail sales for the month of June.

The Headline of that Yahoo, CNet news item is kinda misleading.

Nice to see Hindspring doing so well at 25% of the June sales and I hope it continues. But if you read the article it goes on to list June sales for Palms as: Palm Vx @ 16%, Palm IIIxe @ 13.6%, and lists the order ranking but doesn't give #s for the Palm VII, Palm V, or Palm IIIe. So it's evident that total Palm sales are ahead of Handspring's.

True... Palm's TOTAL sales did beat Handspring's. But the VDx was the top selling handheld overall, beating the Palm Vx by a 50% margin (25% vs 16%).

Now how will Handspring vs Palm sales be compared when a new higher priced and upscale version of the Handspring comes out?

I would expect this to change greatly once Palms are readily available again. IIIe is like gold dust, you won't find it anywhere. I've travelled across four states in the past two months, no-where.

The others besides the IIIc are not readily available and take a little hunting before they can be found.

Although I expect the figures to drop, overall the lack of Palms in the short term has allowed the Visor to capture a spotlight that in another situation would be more difficult to achieve in a market where most people (including what I used to) think that the only PDA worth owning is one made by Palm. (now it's just one that has Palm OS )

I think the important thing to note is that the Handspring Visor Deluxe is outselling its direct competition, which I would argue is the Palm IIIxe. They are the exact same price, same amount of ram.... they're about as closely matched as you can get. The major differences being Springboard and USB on the Visor, and flashable ROM on the Palm IIIxe. So, the HSVDx had 25% market share, while its direct competitor, the Palm IIIxe, had 13.6%. I don't see the Palm V or VII as direct competition to the Visor- they seem to me to be targeted at a different audience.
