change your SIM or talk to your provider.

"no carrier" messages mean that your SIM card is not data enabled.

some SIMs really do not have this feature and some can be switched on by your provider.

there was a time when your provider will have to give you a separate number when you use your data features. thus you'll have a different fax number (if you use it for that). i got this info waaay back from my provider and the nokia website then.

nowadays most SIM cards are all data enabled as WAP and other mobile services are being promoted by the providers to attract customers.

This is largely network dependent; yep, most modern SIMs will have been set up to provide data features, without a separate number. But you still need one for incoming calls since, unless they're end-to-end digital (ie from ISDN) then the network can't tell the difference between voice and data.

SO you can make calls without a separate number, but to receive, you do need one. SOme networks simply issue the extra numbers automatically when they turn on data, in case you'll want to receive calls. Others guard spare numbers more carefully, and only give you a data number if you specifically request one.

Nigel.
