Ok, now I'm upset. Just finished reading the vegas article here on visorcentral.

The main reason I purchased my Prism & Omnisky modem was to take it with me when I travel. I throughly researched the omnisky web site before making my purchase. Checked each city that I travel to thoughout the year. The most important one for me is Las Vegas, NV. I travel there a handful amount of times thoughout the year for conventions. The article says that the service did not work at all the whole week the author was there. I'm wondering if there was an outage or if the service just doesnt work there.

Has anyone successfully used the Omnisky service in Las Vegas , Nevada. If so, where did you stay (e.g. where did it work for you).

I was in Las Vegas during the first week of November. I didn't have my Minstrel S modem yet but I did take my Minstrel V (Palm configuration) and it worked.

I stayed at The Mirage and also was in the Sands Convention center during a trade show and noted no major problem connecting. In defense of Omnisky, the VisorCentral staff was there of course during Comdex and the amount of wireless usage has to be at an all time high during that convention. Even in a wireless world you still have to connect to a wire (cellular tower) and if everyone is using a cell phone or other such device a connection might not be possible.

During the convention that I attended, my AT&T phone often got a fast busy signal indicating to many people using the cellular towers.

I connected several times during the day and noticed that the mornings were the busiests times. One evening though, we were eating dinner at "The Range" inside of Harrah's (I recommend the place if you like steaks) and our President was asking how the "market" had done that day and I pulled down several stocks he was interested in without any problems.

I think your connections will be just like any thing else that is wireless - if the local system is not designed to handle the traffic then you might have a problem but I can state that in Las Vegas I could not complain about the service considering that Comdex is the largest convention and the AAPEX show (which I was at) is the second largest with about 300,000 people there just for the show.

There have been a few posts here that complain about the service level of the Minstrel S - I still have my Palm Minstrel V and I haven't seen any difference in connection strength.

I tried it at the hotel (Riviera), the convention center, and the airport. All gave me a "serial error (0x308)" or something like that. Maybe the system was full?

Thanks for the article enjoyed it!

When you tried Omnisky in Vegas, did you just try it a couple times, or were you trying it on a daily basis several times a day? I'm figuring if the system was busy, and it was only tried a couple times, that could be the answer.

I'm usually a night owl, so when I'm on vacation I wind up checking my email between 1-3 AM. I'm hoping that will help to connect.


If anyone else has experience using Omnisky in Vegas, please post it!

A serial error of that type sounds more like a technical problems and not a connection problem to me. Have you been able to use the modem since returning?

When the system was busy I would simply get a timeout error that stated a full screen Network busy.....try again later or check modem diagnostics if problem reoccurs. I was getting a serial problem like you were describing that was preventing the modem from working on my Prism when I first got the unit. That was resolved with a correction to the modem settings via the tech support.

I am confident in the capabilities of Omnisky to provide service in Las Vegas. I have been to Vegas 3 times since February and never had a problem with the Minstrel V. I'd bet that unless the Minstrel S has problems that are undetermined relative to the Minstrel V, you should be able to connect but hopefully somebody else can post into this thread as well.

Some replies in the Omnisky group at eGroups said they could get signals fine in Vegas - just not in the casinos or in the west end of town [I think that's what it said].
