Here's one to stump the gallery....

I'm going to Paris, France in December. I want to receive and send emails while I'm there. I'll be staying in an American-brand (Marriott/Courtyard/Renaissance) hotel.

I own a Visor Deluxe and a Stowaway. What type of SpringBoard modem would be best, and what - if any - software or other equipment would I need to pull this off?

I'd also love to send eyemodule pics, but I don't think that's possible without filtering through my PC. Is that correct?

Also, I do not use my Visor for email domestically. Can I "turn it on" for the trip alone? Again, how?

Thanks in advance for the advice. I'm totally clueless as this is the first time I've travelled to "the continent."

I think any modem will do so get one that matches you case/budget...

Just be sure the hotel does not use a digital phone system.. that wil fry your modem....

I am not an expert in modem setup, so maybe anybody else can help you better with that...

P.s. about the eyemodule/pics, is somebody staying back home with access to your PC? if so he/she could get the pics and send them for you...

I got a thincom modem and it worked beautifully while I was in Greece this summer. You can configure your modem from "system" Application. Also you can e-mail Handspring and they will reply and help. But you will also need a some type of mail reader like proxymail. and you will need to configure your email account such as a pop3. The thincom modem has 3 demo's installed in the modem itself for you to try.

Good luck and have a great trip

i have the handspring modem and if you plug it into a digital line system, it beeps at you. so don't panic TOO much about this issue (if you go with the handspring modem). Depending on the amount of email/internet you'll be doing, you may want to look at the handspring modem as it has it's own batteries and won't drain your visor's batteries. although if it's just quick email up/down loads, the thincom might be better (form factor being primary reason).

As for setting it up, find out what your ISP's server addresses are for email (i.e. pop.mindspring.com and smtp.mindspring.com) and pick up at copy of proximail from http://www.proxinet.com (on the left side menu!) while you're there you might want to get proxiweb aswell (avantgo is another way of 'browsing' on your visor).

Under 'Prefs' on your visor, switch to 'network' and setup the dial up username and password for your ISP, and under 'modem' you probably won't have anything to change but double check that it's logically setup (i.e. connection speed isn't set to 9600 or something like that).

When you want to check your email, make sure that the proper settings are visible under your 'Network' settings and then go to your Proximail. make sure you're proper account is selected for the ISP you're dialing into (Proximail can handle up to 5 email accounts) and then tap one of the buttons (send mail, get mail, both). It will automatically dial into the number you set in network (and is currently showing when you check your network settings). It'll do what it has to and to disconnect, switch to that network screen again under prefs and tap the 'disconnect' button.

alot of moving around apps eh? That's why i have hackmaster with 'phlegmhack' installed...it allows me to travel between these apps without having to go out into the launcher each time! If you have any other problems, post!

In what part of Paris do you live??
I like Paris very much, it's one of my favourite cities in the world...
I've been there a zillion times but now it will take some time before I'm in the neigbourhood...

I can't believe it

That's it - I give up.

I thought that the question - the combination of questions - was something that would never elicit a useful response. You folks are fabulous. THANK YOU for your replies.

The Handspring modem's "beep" when attached to a digital system is VERY appealing. Does the Thincom do the same thing?

Also, does the Thincom appreciably drain the batteries? (Side way of asking if the Handspring modem's batteries mean that much when making a purchasing decision.)

As for eyemodule pics, I think that I'm stuck. I won't have anyone available at home base to access my PC (not sure I can sync across the Atlantic....).

But I believe I'm set. The combination of modems, software, and instructions on how to put it all together is outstanding. I'm a VisorCentral member for life!
