When you balance the good (white background, brighter contrast, cool color) with the bad (pixilated screen, potential shimmer), is the Prism more comfortable to read that the Deluxe?

I'm a heavy user of AvantGo, Peanut Reader and iSilo doc reader, and often default to a large bold font if I'm reading for a half-hour at a stretch. Will the Prism be an improvement?

I definitely think so. I had a Deluxe for about a year before getting a Prism for Christmas. I think it's a big improvement. I'm a heavy AvantGo user myself, and it's more readable. The only exception is in direct sunlight, under those conditions the Deluxe is better.

If you read indoors with normal light bulbs then it is perfect(50% brightness)! Once you get around flourescent lights it become a bit darker, so you'll probably have to up the brightness (75%-100%). If you read outside a lot, in direct sunlight, then even at 100% brightness you are going to find it dificult to read - maybe even more so than with greyscale. Sometimes your hand to give it a little shade is all you need though.

Definately easier on the eyes, particularly in low lighting conditions.

Cool Yepperz Much better

I have to wear shades to read my Prism! B-)

You mentioned pixalation, the Prism screen is 160x160, JUST like the Deluxe and all other Palm Devices. There is no more or less pixalation than on your current deluxe. People complain about this because it is not as high of resolution as a CRT monitor, duh, it's a PALM device! I sold my old Deluxe to my sister's b/f and when I tried to read it I was amazed how hard it was, and it was MINE for over a year!

The Prism screen is too cool, and I can NEVER go back to B/W.

I think "pixelation" is a misnomer. What people are probably referring to when they mention "pixelation" is the high contrast between white pixels and the gaps between them on color PalmOS devices, which isn't an issue with monochrome models. The contrast makes the gaps between pixels more noticeable, especially on a 160 x 160 screen. So the grid pattern is more obvious to the eye than it is on a black-and-white screen.

But even if you've spent five minutes with a Prism, it's clear that true black-on-white text is far more readable than black-on-olive (or teal, or whatever they're calling that background color these days). That, even more than color per se, is reason enough to upgrade.

Lightbulb

Pixelation may be a misnomer, but its still a very real problem. If you stare at a color Palm screen for any length of time, the active pixels get "painted" onto your retina. I noticed this effect when using a Palm IIIc. If you stared at the screen for a while, then looked away at a blank surface (such as a wall), you could see a fine grid pattern wherever you look. It scared the living sh*t out me! Fortunately the anomaly is not permanent, and it goes away after your eyes have adjusted. But I would imagine this is NOT good on your eyes.

Obviously the engineers at Palm MUST increase the display resolution, thereby packing the pixels tightly together.

Yes, I find the "pixelation" irritating. But the display is still nice.

The next Visor should be 240x240 or something like that, but with the same physical screen dimensions. The technology exists today. I think the Visor's screen resolution is 72 pixels per inch. My laptop's screen is around 85 ppi (15" at 1024x768), and the intermediate ones are about 108ish or higher which would mean about 240x240 in a Visor screen. Hmmm... Concidence??? The Compaq iPaq is 240 pixels wide, with the same screen width in inches as the Visor. Oh, if you use the highest resolution laptop screens as a comparison, you could fit about 300 pixels in the width of a Visor screen. Drool...

Thanks, all. I think I was noticing the grid pattern mentioned, and (for the same contrast reasons) less-smooth edges on each letter.

Now you've got me staring at the laptop screen real close to see the grid pattern there!

I'll probably take the plunge anyway...
