I've been reading a lot into the G4 vs P4 debate. It will always seem that the Mac's will do better in some things as the P4's do better in others...right? I have owned a G3 333 for almost 4 years now...and while I don't need a new computer...I've used faster, and now have the erge.

P4 processors on the Intel motherboard are using new RAM going under the name PC800. They claim a pipeline speed of 2.3GHz with a BUS speed of 400MHz problem is, the P4 chip is not able to take advantage of this.

G4 processors are using RAM code named PC133. 133MHz RAM with a 133MHZ BUS. Problem is, G4's can process anywhere from 2-8 Billion things a second...way overcoming the ability of the PC133 board speed.

Sam's solution...why can't Motorola and Intel get together and pop a G4 processor into a PC800 speed board. Wouldn't this create the absolute fastest combo available? If you had the sheer horsepower of the G4, with the pipeline BUS ability of the Intel motherboard, I think you would really truly have something to talk about.

Until then, I keep dreaming of bigger and faster.

yeah yeah!!! I saw that too....MAN!!! I think that the PC1600 and PC2100 (something like that) was being used by AMD, right? I could be mistaken...I think the PC600 and PC800 is Intel, and the other was AMD, with the Athlon processor....

....whatever, this whole thing just blows me away...I guess what I really meant to say, instead of, "the P4 doesn't really take advantage of the pipeline speed." I should have said, "the P4 uses the pipeline speed well, but the P4 chip itself is not as capable of using the pipeline in its entirety, as would the G4."

Any better?

PC600, PC700, and PC800 are a technology of Rambus and is called RDram. Rambus is the ONLY one who can make it, because they hold exclusive patents to it. PC600 is slower the PC800 (300mhz and 400mhz respectivley I believe) and the reason Intel USES Rdram is because it came out before DDRam (will get to that later). Intel signed a contract with Rambus that they will incorporate their Ram into their products. RDram is the only Ram CURRENTLY available that will take of the advantage of the P4 400mhz bus (essentially quad pump 100mhz bus).

DDRam is Double Data Rate Ram, which is not AS fast as Rdram but is pretty darn fast. It comes in two flavors of PC1600 and PC2100 (133mhz and 266mhz respectivley) AMD uses DDRam because no one holds EXCLUSIVE patents to it like Rambus does...and therefore is cheaper. THe AMD Athlon processor runs on either a 200mhz bus (for PC1600) and a 266mhz bus (For PC2100) OR it can run on PC133, which is the predecessor to Rdram and DDR Ram.

PC133 is made by everyone, and is fairly cheap. DDRam runs about $5 more a pop then PC133, whereas Rdram is a little bit more sometimes reaching twice the price of PC133. But considering its a LOT more performance its like comparing the 16mhz Visor to the 33mhz Platinum....twice the price....but a lot more performance.

Thats like asking Palm and Microsoft to cobuild a PDA OS. Not going to happen.

The AMD processor offers more priceerformace then the P4 and in some cases (data processing) the Athlong woops the P4...

ITs basically all personal preference of what you use. Relatively speaking, the newest technology will only offer maybe a 15% increase from the last, and also software needs to be written to take advantage of it.
