I now have Pac Bell DSL, and was wondering how I can get e-mail via Outlook Express with my HS modem. I was using aol and they supplied the software for my VDX. Any suggestions out there?

Not sure what the HandSpring modem has to do with DSL and Outlook Express?

Please clarify if you want to sync your mail with OE when you sync in the cradle, or if you want to download mail direct through your modem to a 3rd party mail application.

Sorry to be confusing. I basically am looking for a way to retrieve my e-mail while traveling using my modem. Probably looking at the 3rd party idea, but am totally unfamiliar with it. I would prefer to use my pacbell.net e-mail address, but have a yahoo e-mail address I also use.

If Pac Bell also provides you with a dial-up number for backup purposes...you can just use that number to connect ussing your HS modem. you should be able to get your e-mail from yahoo as well

As Mr Stream pointed out, you need a dial-up analog connection to do this. DSL is land-locked to your house. I don't think too many DSL providers also provide free dial-up, but it doesn't hurt to check.

My BellSouth DSL provides a dialup number.....so hopefully other "Bell" companies do the same......you would think at least

OK, as others have stated, you can use any PacBell dialup number. Here's the list and they also have a "roaming" option ($2.40/hour) available if you travel out of the area:

As far as email clients go, there are several. I personally use Eudora which allows you to sync many email accounts. If you want to sync with your yahoo email, you will need to enable POP3 access from the Yahoo options.

Eudora also has a PC client and conduit that will allow you to download your mail to your PC and sync to the handheld. You could do this while at home and sync directly with your modem while on the road.

I'm back,

Traded e-mails with Pac Bell a couple times, to varify dialup numbers. That all seems workable, but they don't have any software for dial up on my modem. I would like to stick with Outlook Express for now, and have set up my yahoo e-mail to forward to my Pac Bell e-mail. How, oh how do I dial to these local numbers on my HS modem? I don't follow the PC conduit stuff -sunc with my modem on the road. Am I calling my my computer? I need something to dial up these local numbers. Be kind in your responses- I'm confused

OK, there are a few ways to do this. I suppose you could do a modem sync in which you do call you own computer by modem and sync mail and other applications, but I think this is more complicated than you need so forget this for now.

I would suggest downloading your mail directly. In this case, Outlook Express doesn't enter into the picture. Try downloading a 3rd party Palm OS email application like Eudora (I believe they have a free version). You will need go to your Palm preferences and setup Connection and Network to dial your ISP phone number and connect to their network. Most of the settings are pretty self explanatory but write back if you have questions.

You also need to setup your 3rd party mail application to send and receive mail by entering settings for POP3 and SMTP servers of your ISP as well as your mail password (which will most likely be the same as your ISP network password). I know the server for Pacbell POP is postoffice.pacbell.net. I'm not sure of the SMTP (outgoing) server address but you can get that from Pacbell.

Using Eudora as an example...
Once things are setup correctly, you would open the eudora mail application and tap the 'Check Mail' menu option. The application would then open your HS modem, dial your ISP and establish a connection and then download your mail.

Hopefully you'll find that it's easier than I just made it sound
