Useless

My vote for useless module of the year. I really don't see the point of this module. It would be better if had more recording time.

I agree....just saw a SIMS standalone that did 8hrs for <$200 Think it was on IGO.com

Actually, I've been waiting for this one

I carry my visor as a matter of habit now, but there are many times throughout my day when I can't write with it, and carrying around a separate recorder just isn't a useful option. I'm not going to be dictating documents, I want a quick way to record reminders, and for $60 this fits right in with that.

Hawthorne...Hang tough. I'm with you on this one. IMHO, a voice recorder (granted it's got to be reasonably priced) is the one SB that at least begins to fit into the Palm/Handspring mantra...that being a PIM (ie organize your personal life of appointments and to-do's, and yes thoughts). It will be one of the best SB put to market. I'm waiting for the Total Recall as it works both in and out of the unit, but again its got to reasonably priced. Can't tell you how many times I've wanted to jot down a quick thought or appointment, but putting all the details relating to it in my PDA (grafitti) isn't convenient. Why in God's name would there be a MIC if someone didn't want you to record through it. I hear enough people defending the premiss of a useless, low-end resolution novelty (their own words) camera SB's. And don't get me started on this phone 'thingy'. Phones will evolve into PDA's. PDA's will not evolve into phones. Wow, that should be repeated. Phones will evolve into PDA's. PDA's will not evolve into phones. If you think otherwise, I've got a set of Firestones I'd like to sell you.

You're missing the point. A phone vs. PDA arguement isn't even relevant. What do you call a phone-size device running the PalmOS with a M100 (or smaller) size screen? More to the point, what would you call a pager-sized computer with wireless data comm capabilities, and bluetooth interfaces (mic, ear piece and display - pick your screen size or even an eye piece)? You'll see such a device, running the PalmOS or EPOC, in the next 12 to 24 months. The size of the computer will depend on what you want to do, and may well start somewhat larger than a RIM 850/950. Exactly when we see such a device depends on how vendors decide to handle the display situation. For example, if a vendor leaves the display in the computer, they could probably ship such a device in less than 12 months.

There are three trends going on. Wireless data communication capabilities are getting embedded in more devices (cars, computers, appliances, etc.), devices of all sorts are getting smarter, and personal area networking (e.g. bluetooth) is allowing you to integrate the operation of many of these devices. One obvious consequence is that we are no longer going to be bound by traditional form factors for devices.

What's with the rant? If you've ever tried navigating that thing they call the "wireless web" on a cell phone, you know it's just about the most useless form of Internet access ever imagined. Going online with a PDA is far more functional and practical. Plus...the cellphone monopolists are offering access to their own closed systems, where they control what sites you visit. The PalmOS is an open system offering full Web access.

The beauty of the Visorphone is that it combines three things -- cellphone, PDA and wireless Internet -- in one device with one wireless account. So it's not as expensive as it first appears, because you don't need to pay for two separate wireless accounts. By my reckoning, it will pay for itself in 6-7 months (saving a minimum $30-$40 a month for the second wireless account) without even accounting for the cost of a wireless modem.

I predict Visorphone will be the unexpected smash hit of the gadget world...and will change the way a lot of people think about the evolution of wireless.
