There is another serial cable. Check out the Mark/Space DataCord.

Cable works on Prism
For those who are wondering this cable works well with the Prism. However I find that my connectors did not fit that securely. Sometimes it comes loose very easily so I have to watch that. Otherwise its fine.

MarkSpace DataCord
I have the MarkSpace DataCord for the Visor Deluxe on order. Should have it in a week or two, and I'll be posting my review here.

serial cable
The hotsync cable can't be used with many serial devices that just have transmit and receive ports as in many GPS units(including my etrex). The conversion circuit in the cable gets it's power from the DTR, CTS and RTS pins of the device it plugs into. You have two options to talk to serial devices, though: 1 - build a small box that contains a power source(like a 9v battery) and tie it to the DTR line or 2 - do what I did and buy the Mark/Space Datacord DCH-M9. That cable robs power from the Visor to power the circuit and talks to any serial device (including my Etrex). That cable can not pull double duty as a hotsync cable though. I'll let you know why when I find out.
For GPS's (and in fact many serial devices), one needs a serial cable that has a "modem" configuration. Often, it is desirable to have the RS232 interface electronics powered from the Visor end. A cable which has those characteristics is the:
PDCH-M9 (3')
PDCH-M9-6 (same, but 6")

Visor Data Cable with Power
One good way of connecting a Visor to a GPS, especially in a car, is if you can obtain the power for the Visor (Prism especially), the RS232 inteface electronics, and the GPS from the Cigarette Lighter. There is a cable which does this, called the PDCH-M9EPOW-6 from:
