Unhappy

I use the Omnisky Wireless Modem in my Prism. Last weekend, I was with a bunch of friends at a beach house. We were all talking about auctions and I whipped the old Prism out, attached the modem and in less than a minute was online shopping at E-bay. After everyone was suffuiciently impressed and went about there business I was getting ready to power down. However, I was curius how much a charge I had left. I tapped the icon that you use to check the battery life, connection, etc and the damn thing froze on me. I did a soft reset and got an error message similar to:

"datamgr.8434 out of range"

Well, that was all she wrote, no amount of soft resets would get the damn thing back up again so I had to do a hard reset. This is the third hard re-set in about 4 months and I don't use it all that much, only when I am travelling. I had already downloaded the update from the omnisky page. (note: if you own the Omnisky Modem, it is strongly suggested that you download the update)

I am wondering if other people have had similar experiences. I love the thing, it is sort of like that story when you were a kid.

"There was a little who had a little curl and when she was good she was very very good, but when she was bad it was awful"

My question to the board is, is there anything that I can do to stop this problem?

Thanks in advance.

So does the software update fix the problem?

The software update helps but doesn't totally fix the problem. I use a minstrel S with OS service with my prism and got several crashed that required a hard reset during my first week of useage. Since then (2 months later), I've only had two, which isn't so bad. But the minstel S is known to cause a lot of hard and soft resets in the visor, just something you have to put up with. It helps if you always shut down the minstrel when you're done with it, then return to the app launcher screen, then power off your visor. But your situation is nothing out of the ordinary so I wouldn't be too concerned about it. A backup module would probably be a wise investment though (only $40).

I can mirror mmendo1's post. I've had OS for the last month, previously with a platinum and now with my new prism. I've had a couple hard resets in the last month. I live and die with my backup module.
One caution with the backup module though. I've gotten in the habit of just hitting that big ol' button in the middle of the screen to backup my visors so often. Once, after a fatal error, I was doing a restore, and absentmindedly hit the big button (backup) and basically cleared everything that was on the module by backing up an empty visor! Then I had to do a whole manual rebuild....OUCH.

Me Too!

Funny that you mention that. That is exactly what I did at the beach (see original post).

I was so angry that I had to hard reset, then excited because I remembered I had the back module and then angry again because of my own ignorance I hit the wrong button.

I did not mention it in my original post, however, now that someone else had mentioned I can come out of the Bad Back-Up Closet

Unhappy Missing "doc" files

As long as I power the Minstrel off and exit the app I seldom have problems; before or after the upgrade.

That having been said, last week my VPR locked up while I was trying to shut down the Minstrel. I ended up with the dreaded "Flashing PalmOS" screen. The only resolution was a hard reset. I plugged in the Backup Module and pressed the CORRECT (Restore) button. (The only data that was not on the BU Module was a couple of junk emails.)

Later that day I had to check a "doc" file for some information and discovered that it wasn't on the VPR. Then I noticed that ALL of the "doc" files were missing! These were files that have been there and backed-up for months. I don't know if the files were not backed-up or were not restored. As far as I can tell everything else was there.

After downloading the "doc" files to the VPR, I did a back-up, hard reset, and restore and the "doc" files were there.

I don't know if it was a fluke or what. I now keep a copy of the critical files on the 8MB Flash just in case.

me too.

That scenario of hitting backup instead of restore is all too common. There ought to be a confirmation screen there.

Phew... I'm glad I'm not the only one to backup a dead Visor. It does give you a warning of sorts when your doing it. "The database you are backing up has xxx fewer records...are you sure?" But this warning can be legit as well. It happens often when I do a real restore and my AvantGo account has changed and there are fewer records on the device than on the backup module. I tend to ignore it.
