Ran my batteries too low...

I just got Sim City last night and loaded up some fresh batteries. I must have lost track of how long I was playing because when I tried to play again this afternoon, I was already getting low battery warnings. I ignored the warnings though, and soon my Visor (Standard) went dead. All the data was lost, but a quick sync fixed my datebook, todo, memopad, etc. The first problem is every time I sync the computer will install every program I have ever loaded on the Visor, even if I deleted them a long time ago. With a 2MB limit, the sync process gets an error fairly soon. Is there a way to fix this? The next problem is I can't delete these programs once they are installed. The time and battery life display is now on the bottom of the screen and the drop down menu silk screen button (lower left) doesn't work, so there is no way to remove them. The contrast controls, pop-up keyboard, and pop-up numpad also do not work. Any suggestions?

I would do a hard reset of your Visor. And then look under the handspring folder on your harddrive and look whats in the Add-on folder. I think the programs are installed from there. Remove the ones you dont want. If this doesnt work then its possible the programs are added to your unit from the Backup folder which is located under your units name within the handspring folder. I would remove the programs you dont want from the backup folder and see if this works. I am by no means an expert on what happens durring the sync process, so maybe someone else can confirm this. Give that a try.

Also, when you delete somthing from your handheld it usually asks you if you want to keep a backup on your computer, so just say no if you want to completely get rid of it. Hope this helps.

Erik

Move or rename the backup folder. Hotsync is probably looking in there for everything that needs to be restored to your Visor. Alternatively, poke around in the backup folder and get rid of everything you don't want reinstalled.

1. On your desktop, go to "program files\palm (or handspring)\'your user name'", then rename 'Backup' to something else, or move it out of that folder. This is where the programs are being re-loaded from.

2. On the Palm Desktop, go to Hot-Sync\customize and turn off the 'install' option(s). Set the others to go from desktop to handheld.

3. Do a hard reset on your Visor- press the reset button and hold it. Press the on/off and hold it. Release the reset, then the on/off. You should be asked if you want to erase all- hit up for yes.

4. Hot-sync. This should restore the datebook, addresses, etc. but not install other programs.

5. Reinstall selected programs using whatever install technique you normally use. I prefer to reinstall from a saved 'master copy' in the 'program files\palm\add-on' folder.

6. When everything is back OK, reset the stuff in step 2.

7. hot-sync again to get the 'backup' folder working right.

8. Learn and practice a good back-up practice, maybe using JBBackUp or Backup Buddy.

I learned this the hard way! I may have missed something, though, so double check before you do it!

Problem fixed, thanks for everyone's help. Last night I deleted everything in the back-up folder but when I synced, all the programs were there again. I also turned off the install option but that didn't work. Then I tried doing the hard reset then deleting the back-up and that worked. Thanks again.
