What are you paying for regular unleaded gasoline? You do not have permission to vote on this poll.

Actually enforcing it is rather simple ... In the phoenix area, it is part of the highway patrol to deal with it .. Josh (dick-richardson) said it well. Raising gas prices raise prices on anything that has to be shipped, no matter what form of transportation (unless you use nuclear powered submarines, ha!, I crack myself up

Do you folks realize that one of the reasons gas prices were so high was because of the extreme ENVIRONMENTAL restrictions placed on the refineries by the Clinton administration? If you don't believe me, do a little research (using an unbiased source, which doesn't include the liberal controlled mass-media). Also, check out the amount of tax applied per gallon. In a lot of States it ranges from 25-40% of the price of the gas. I'm lucky to live in Alabama with the lowest tax on gas of any state.

If the environmentalists would get off their emmission controlled rear ends and allow drilling for oil in the U.S. (we've got tons just sitting around down there) we'd have our own resources to fall back on when the OPEC dictators decide to cut back and raise prices (but remember that the price is also pegged by taxes on us and oil refineries).

Do any of you know what the average gas mileage of a car was in the 50's - 70's? Worse than the worst gas guzling SUV. Around 10 MPG from what I hear from grandparents, older friends and reports. So I'm pretty happy when my Isuzu Rodeo gets it's average 17 MPG.

I'm happy paying what I have to for gas for my SUV. I'm not for polluting the earth that my God has given us, but I say that most environmentalists take it too far.

I've rattled on too much for now so I'll just wait for the flames from all the liberals out there

I would just point out that, as adjusted for inflation, gas prices today are lower than they were in the early 1970's and the early 1980's (during Republican administrations). I know the dittoheads like to blame Clinton for everything, but this one is not fair.

Just to bring this slightly back on topic - regular unleaded this weekend at Costco in the L.A. area - $1.51.

BTW - I do drive an SUV. I used to drive a 2-door sports car - but the first time I tried to bring home a regular sized television and couldn't, my mind was made up. It may use up gas, etc., but it's less pollutant than a diesel delivery truck.

BTW2 - I've started taking a commuter express bus to work, but unless I can guarantee to leave the office by 6, I'm screwed, because that's when it stops.

Diesel burns more efficiently than gas (making allowances for vehicle maintenance). IOW, diesel only has a bad rap because of poorly tuned semi's.

I'm not saying ALL of the US is poluted, but when I drove from Vegas to LA the sky got darker the closer I came to LA, and the weather did not change....I'm sure 80% of the US is very clean, but then again 80% of the people probably live in the other 20%...

Diesel is indeed more fuel efficient and with the modern turbodiesels you have the same kind of driving experience (maybe even better because of the torque in low revs)

The statement that modern SUV are cleaner than cars in the '50's doesn't make it allright if there are cars out there that twice as clean...

Also why does the US have 92 octane petrol? No wonder you buy the big V8's. In europe you tank 95 or 98 octane and a 1.6 liter engine will do, no need for a (heavy!) 5 liter V8...

92? I'm happy using the 89 with ethanol! 91 is the premo stuff here, and as such, it's too expensive.

In Georgia we have 87, 89, and 91-93 Octane levels. Most automobiles will run on 87 Octane. However, there are several cars that will only run on the Premium Fuel, which is considered 91+ Octane. I drive an Acura Integra GSR and the VTEC engine requires that I run Premium Fuel. Sure, I pay more for it, but I have a reliable, somewhat quick, well handling car that gets anywhere from 25 to 32 MPG. Not to mention it gets great emissions.

One thing that I believe would make people more willing to drive fuel efficient automobiles is to make owning them a benefit. Instead of penalizing those who drive gas guzzlers, give a tax rebate to those who drive more efficient cars.

Also, I do not think we will ever see gasoline engines go away completely. The government makes so much money on the Oil they would not want to give up the revenue. The gas is not that expensive anyway, it is the tax that is killing us. I cannot believe they get away with ~.50 a gallon. How did we as Democracy allow this? Not to mention the fact that the US drills for oil on its on soil and then EXPORTS it, while the oil we use is IMPORTED and taxed like crazy.

That'll never work. It's far too logical and sensible.

1) We're not a democracy. We're a representative republic. 2) Being a representative republic, the system only works when the citizenry actually pays attention to what their representatives do, and holds them accountable. 3) Have you looked at voting statistics (ratio of registered voters to those eligible to vote, registered voters who actually turn up to vote, etc.) recently? There's your answer.

Not to mention the fact that the US drills for oil on its on soil and then EXPORTS it, while the oil we use is IMPORTED and taxed like crazy.

*sigh* Yeah, and people in Florida can stop drilling/exploration in a location that's closer to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama than most of them are.

As screwy as this may sound, the US uses a different system for rating octane than the rest of the world, so the ratings my not be that different. 87 octane in the US is about 91 octane else where. You can see it explained a little bit here. And you always thought the USA liked to inflate its ratings...

In fact, in the D.C. area, the carpool-with-a-stranger phemomenon has been very successful (albeit without the help of the internet). Over time, several spots each morning in the Virginia suburbs and evenings in D.C. have developed as gathering spots for "slugs" who line up to form instant carpools with strangers to permit drivers to drive in carpool (HOV) lanes.

Moreover, I drive to work with my wife every morning utilizing an HOV lane that saves me at least 15 minutes commute time. Every so often I see a cheater, but for the most part drivers obey the HOV restrictions.

We now have HOV lanes in Atlanta on a portion of Interstate 75. They are enforced daily and done so 24 hours a day. However, there is always someone who jumps in the lane to pass a slower driver. Not really sure how much time is really saved taking this lane. It would certainly be more beneficial if you could exit directly from the HOV lane without having to cross 06 lanes to get to the off ramp.

Of course, some cities designed the HOV lane as a seperate lane completely, in that it is in the center and they have concrete barriers up. The only way to access it is from the exit ramps. You cannot just merge into it from normal traffic.

While that seems to be a better design, it would require a great deal of work to convert to existing interstates. It definately would have to be built as the road is being built.

Given the technology America has, one has to wonder why we're still in a representative republic when we could pull off direct democracy. We could do it, and we could make it as easy as clicking the polls here at VC. Big issues would be: what stays local vs. what is national (national decisions are much to expansive to be effective), security issues (making sure Jim Bob really is Jim Bob, and that Jim Bob didn't vote 1500 times), etc..

In the netherlands they have simular lanes, but someone objected to the 2 people or more rule and he won the lawcase

on grounds that everybody who pays road tax should be able to use all the road (they pay for).. really a pitty if you ask me, not that lane is as quick, sometimes even slower than the normal lanes...

I guess the market in the US is big enought they can get away with using their own standard....
Ironically the US standard are lot of the times worse than the worldwide standard...

Yeah the US pisses me off sometimes...

The funny thing is that US knows that the metric system is better and the government has been trying to switch over to it for years, but they just haven't been able to pull it off yet. Oh well I love my country
