Still Confused about Memory Options

I've got a standard Visor with 2MB. I would like more memory. I have an understanding that memplug options would require a manual copying of applications and/or DBs from one memory over to the other. I don't consider this ideal as I would like ease of use.

So the ? I have... Does the standard Springboard Flash modules, 8MB or 16MB, integrate into the Visor OS seamlessly such that I don't have to "manage" the movement of apps and such?

Nope

None of the memory modules integrate seemlessly witht he Visor OS. You ahve to so dome transferring either on the Visor or on your PC via reader. If you want more memory, sell your Visor and get a Visor Deluxe. Thats your best bet to seemless memory upgrade at the moment.

Well, you could also trade up the regular Visor and get an Edge for only 100 dollars more than a Deluxe, and get the neewer OS, thinner, silent alarm and fast lookup.

This is not true. The SM and CF cards require transferring, but if you use the HS or Hagiwara memory modules, any programs on them [not the DBs - keep those on the Visor] will run directly from the module. I have the 8MB HS module and have never had a problem running programs directly. Apparently not all programs will work, but most - and all of mine - do.

Yes Pusfarm, this is true. But he still has to hotsync the files from the computer to the Visor and then transfer them to Flash Module.

So you can't hotsync with the flash module? Aw, that sucks. You can only place apps in the flash module then, huh? And all the data must be in the Visor's mem?

If you REALLY want the most RAM without any hassle, buy a Prism and send it to someone to let him modify your Prism to 16MB. No hassle after that. Of course you have to pay for the modification or you can buy some RAM and modify it yourself.

Thanks pusfarm,

It seems that for simplicities sake, I'll be investing in the proprietary flash cards. Hopefully the progs I use will be able to be moved to the addon flash and run from there without problems.

I heard that PalmOS 4 will treat all memory the same, so I think my next PDA will have to be a Palm, as I have an understanding that the OS is upgradable on those, but not on the Handspring products. What a bumber.

Why not invest in an 8 MB unit instead? I assure you that you are going to run into a lot of road blocks with your 2 MB unit. You wont be able to load any file larger than 1.7 MB to your Flash module.

Yes it does. And you are left hanging if you run into any problems with the unit.

I have not heard of anyone having problems with Handspring after opening their units.

There is no way for Handspring to really know if the unit is opned or not. Still, what is he going to do if is upgraded unit run into trouble? I know if he is tech saavy he would be able to swap things, but what if he is not?

PalmOS 4.x does not treat all memory the same. It provides a standard API (VFS) for accessing apps and data stored on removable storage cards but this API is very different from the old DataManager API used to access data in RAM. Applications can be launched from the storage card (at which time they are copied to RAM by the OS and executed) but for apps to access data on the card, they must have VFS functionality added by the developers.

VFS is only a new File system standard programmer's interface released by Palm in Dec 2000. Even you have VFS support, most existing applications are still unable to directly access data on the card.

However, it is possible for directly access data in removable memory by using system extension e.g. PiDirect, AutoCF etc.

PalmOS 4 default launcher will simply automatically copy the whole application to RAM and delete the application when you exit.
The problem is you need to have enough memory for the application to copy and it won't help you to copy application's databases for you.

Sooo.... Do the memplug things and standard flash operate the same? IE. I can store apps on the addon flash, and run them from there, or are they always copied into regular memory before execution?

BTW, do the Palms, including those new M50x's operate in the same way?

I have a 2mb Visor and 8mb flash card. The only two programs that I could not run from the flahs card are Vindigo and Coola.

But my point was that he only has to do it once... not each time the app is run. I can be lazy at times, but I wouldn't think that one extra step ONE TIME would be that cumbersome.
