I have to admit after perusing the "Dana" website I'm at somewhat of a loss... What is the role of this new machine? Is it likely to replace the already ubiquitous desktop.. (PC or OsX)? Unlikely. Does it really have the power to replace a laptop as we know them today? Unlikely. When we use Palm OS handhelds we give up the power of a laptop for 1) simplicity (which the Dana has - inherently) and 2) physical SIZE. This going to provide a real portable solution. On the website there is a publicity photo of three school kids dutifully pecking away at their units in the classroom. So, is it a new and powerful educational tool? Unlikely. Anyway who has even set foot into a classroom knows that children learn from computers through captivating color graphics and games that ALSO teach. The Dana will not meet this standard. So, I'm all for new technology and expanding the Palm OS as a platform... but I don't think this is going to create many ripples...

Reminds me a bit of a PSION on steroids withouth the clamshell option....
Don't see what the point is, a palm device is small an portable, should fit in a pocket.
For a Laptop it has too little power/expandebility.
Only if it has a low price it may compete with a laptop, but personally I would rather have a PC treo270/NR70V combo than one of these...
Close but no sigar..
But maybe we are missing the point...

AlphaSmart sells most of it's product to schools. It is a great company with wonderful support and staff. Oh, and no, I don't work for them.
I've used AlphaSmarts for about five years now, and wish I had budget to get a classroom set of these Danas. They work incredibly well for teaching keyboarding and word processing. When I teach writing, my students all publish. Sometimes I can take them to the lab, sometimes I can't. With a set of these pups in my room the students can type their writing in at any time. They are great.
Also, when we do research, it isn't practical to lug around computers, so we use the AlphaSmarts to enter our information. I can prepare a template and send it to all the student's units, but more often I just show them what I want their research to look like. One file for info, one for bibliography.
These aren't meant to take the place of computers with the bells and whistles of educational software (which doesn't really using technology as a tool in my opinion), but adding Palm OS and tons of apps (oh, how I'd love to have all my students using PicoMap!) makes it much more attractive. Consider entering information into a spreadsheet when at camp (outdoor school). Or giving digital homework sent home with a Dana to complete it. I know, there are other issues here, but I'm dreaming big!
Anyway, perhaps you are right and the Dana is a dud, but I'm not convinced of that just yet.
