Thumbs up Nice replacement

I have to say these are some good models to replace the VDx and VPL. Nothing revolutionary but some nice refinements that the customers wanted in the VPL and VDx. However I do hope they are working on something more revolutionary like a colorized edge or a Prism that is only as big as the Deluxe.

Yeah, the NEO and Pro are good replacements for the well marketed and established VDX and VPLT. I think people need to realize that these models are not designed to be Upgrades, just updated replacements for the Handspring base models. Just as before, if current Visor Plat and Deluxe owners want real upgrades, they need to buy UPGRADES to those models, not equivalents (updated replacements). For example, they should consider the purchase of a Prism, or wait for the production of new and differently featured visor models soon to come out.

Hats off to Handspring for providing excellent replacement models of the basic Visors.

I loved my Blue VDX (until I gave it away) and I love the translucent graphite (aka smoke) in the neo. May be worth the $200 just to have the spare unit. Of course I would also love to have the Pro with the 16MB of memory.

I have to say that...

...this doesn't bode well for my personal fashion scheme. I want a green upgrade path for my green Visor Deluxe, and it's looking like Handspring is only about red and blue and grays these days. bummer

If I didn't go accersory crazy with my Plat and have too much spent on it that I can't get back because of price drops, I'd be with you.

WHY CANT PEOPLE LIKE U TWO UNDERSTAND HANDSPRING IS UPDATING THE MIDDLE CLASS STUFF, IF NO ONE WANTED LOWER CLASS HANDHELDS THEY WOULDNT BE THERE, JUST OVER PRICED COLOR PDA'S!?! PALM HASENT DONE MUCH WITH THERE LOWER CLASS PALMS. SO IF I WAS ABOUT TO GET MY FIRST PDA AND HAD A $200 PRICE RANGE ID GET THE PRO.
FOR ALL WE KNOW HANDSPRING COULD RELEASE A COLOR UNIT WE COULD ONLY DREAM OF IN LESS THAN 5 MONTHS. AND AS FOR THE MEMORY, I THINK THIS IS A GREAT IDEA, AS I PREFER TO STAY AWAY FROM CARDS AND THE HASSEL(FLASH SPRINGBOARDS ALL THE WAY!!)

Well I'm glad they are updating the middle/lower class. They'll get more users. But the Prism is

* Fat
*160x160, when a comparable Sony is 320x320 for the same price
*Old

If I have to wait 5 months for Handspring to catch up to what Sony's standard is, I'll go to Sony or PPC. But most of the things I bought have gone way down in value (price drops) so I'm need things compatable with what I have. HS better get out a Prism II or I'll cut my losses and eBay all my stuff.

Is it possible that these new units will serve to kill the Edge as well? It seems to me that both new units have the Edge capabilities (processor, OS version, rechargeables in the Pro, etc) in the old trusty VDx/Platinum form-factor (including the HotSync connector) meaning all exisiting accessories (like the Stowaway and GoType! keyboards) and modules will work with them.

Why would you buy an Edge when compared to the Pro?

thanks mark, that thought had never accured to me. i would think that since the edge has the lowest selling rate(expecially now) it is the only visor with that form i would expect handspring to stop making it and put more attention to making a better color model.

ONE QUESTION: what is the time frame it takes to make a devise normally? i would guess 6 months.

The Edge doesn't have a really low selling rate does it? It's listed as the #2 selling PDA on Amazon.com, and the #1 Visor.. I've used it quite a bit and I think it's very very nice.. maybe overpriced.

I wouldn't be surprised, but that doesn't mean it's doing bad. Amazon lists 65 PDA's and omits old PDA's as well as some companies (like Sony) altogether. There's a lot of competition, and the Edge is relatively new. Popular PDA's like the Deluxe and Palm V have had years to build a userbase so there will clearly be more of those out there.

If some car or computer model occupies 5% of the cars on the road or 5% of sales that's an incredible seller.

The Edge will probably drop in sales due to its direct competition with the Pro but I doubt it's going away too soon

Visors are pretty easy to take apart. You could always do some surgery and transplant the Neo guts into your green Deluxe case. I can't imagine the innards being too much different

Cool Upgrading to something classier

I was pretty happy with my Ice Deluxe, but I've got to say that I was blown away when I opened the box and pulled out my Pro. The case feels sturdier that my old Deluxe and the color is pure class. With the smoked grey cover it just looks too cool!

Thanks for posting this. I was really happy with the Pro's features, but from pictures, I wasn't quite sure. I even went to a few stores to see it in the flesh, but couldn't find it.

Too bad I have my VisorPhone in all the time and can't use the cover.

geez, some of you are soooo defensive of handspring when other people criticize them. just because they dont agree with you doesnt mean that their point is invalid. people are just suprised that after all the "color edge" hype, that no new revolutionary color devise has been announced.

Arrow

The Edge sells because it is the BEST form factor of any PDA -- period. I don't see it going away -- I hope I see it going color. If HS continues with only larger form factor color units -- it will be in trouble.
