Question Backup Module & batteries

I just bought a Handsprin Backup module yesterday (my first module). Just by having it in the Springboard slot, it drains my batteries--even when it's NOT being accessed.

If I have to keep it out of the slot when I'm not accessing it, then I'm afraid I won't have it when I need it--or worse yet, I'll lose it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Don

Lightbulb

Yep this sounds familiar. Had the same problem with my Remote solution 2mb. It drained a new set of batteries overnight. I contacted the company and they replaced it straightaway. Something about the module drawing the wrong voltage. I suggest you get it replaced ASAP

I just called Handspring tech support. I was told that they don't recomend leaving the module in the Visor when not in use.

Looks like I'll be returning the module tomorrow.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Well, the purpose of the Backup Module is to restore your handheld should you perform a HardReset. While HotSyncing the Visor should work fine, this is not an option if you are away from your machine.

Of the all the modules I have ever purchased, the Backup Module is the one I would recommend to any Visor owner.

I would also advise against keeping it in the Visor at all times. If you should lose your Visor, you lose all your data. Keep them with you, but seperate.

I definately would not return it, just because you cannot keep it in all the time. It is not a module that you constantly access. If you are looking to extend the memory, then you need a Flash Module or an adaptor like the MemPlug.

Call handspring and ask for a replacement visor and/or module. I had a backup in a deluxe on an almost constant basis with no problems. You shouldn't have problems either.

I have to agree. Whats the point of having an expandable hand held if you cant keep the module in at all times.

It is recommended that you not keep it in your Visor to protect your Data. It has nothing to do with Battery Loss.

I do agree, that Battery loss should not be a big deal. I kept my MemPlug in all the time and had no problems. Now, my wife keeps the MW Dictionary Module in and the battery does not appear to drop.

I would contact HS and look into a replacement, or replace the BackupModule and see if it is the culprit.

But GSR13's initial point is still a good one...you shouldn't leave your backup module in all the time b/c your data is gone if your handheld is gone.

It's like putting your spare car key on the same ring as your other one.

get a replacement.

I leave my backup module in my visor at all times except when using my HS modem.

Never had any power problems, it's even outlived a visor destroying fall.

I'm not as concerned with losing the Visor as I am about my data getting corrupted. If I'm on the road and something goes wrong, I want to be able to quickly and reliably restore.

However, if I am having to carry the module seperate, I'm worried that I'll either forget it at home or the office (or worse, lose it)--then I'm back in the same boat as not having it at all.

The reason I'm not concerned about losing the Visor is that it's ALWAYS either:

1) in my hand being used
2) on my hip in its E&B Case
3) on my nightstand while I'm sleeping/showering/dressing

If I carry the BM seperate, it'll be either:

1) in my pocket (hopefully not getting broken/scratched)
2) sitting on my desk at work
3) sitting on my nightstand

I would have to just hope that I remembered to take it with me before I left. The ONLY time the BM would do me any good for corrupted data is when I'm traveling (not often--but enough to make me concerned). When I'm at home or the office, I would just re-hotsync (I have BackupBuddy in both locations).

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'll give HS another chance to replace the BM before I return it.
