Yes, well...even though I am a PC user, I'm a big fan of Apple and its products. Which is quite a change considering that two years ago I was a Mac basher. Now I turn to butter every time Steve Jobs walks onto a stage. Sickening!

I would murder everyone around me for a T-book or G4 Quicksilver with 17" Cinema display. But those products are a little too rich for my blood.

With Apple it's always hard telling what they have up their sleeve for the next big thing. But I highly doubt Apple is working on a PDA. Unless Apple is willing to use the PalmOS, I think making a PDA would actually be a mistake. The last thing we need is another proprietary mobile OS hitting the market. The industry is already matured to the point where standards are being established. Apple is too late to change this market.

The odds of Apple releasing a PDA at this stage are virtual nil as far as I'm concerned. PDA sales peaked well over a year ago -- a fact that anyone is free to dispute but was cited by none other than Steve Jobs.

And Jobs is the number one reason why Apple won't enter the PDA market. It amazes me how long people persist in this hope, despite the fact that Macworld after Macworld proves otherwise, and that everything that Steve has had to say about PDAs has been condescending, to put it mildly.

Back to the main topic.

Fry's (at least here in LA) is carrying refurbed Prisms for $199, which is the best replacement I can recommend for someone who was content with the VDX. I still prefer the Prism's screen to any Cli I've seen, since I value brightness and color depth over resolution -- but that's a pretty subjective call; go into a store and check for yourself. The form factor's nearly identical to the VDX, and is compatible with any modules or accessories you may have.

I just moved from a Prism to a Kyocera QCP-6035 smartphone (picked it up tonight) because I don't see much of a future in unconnected PDAs, although I'm sure most people on this site would disagree at this point. I'd stay with Handspring if the company would release a color CDMA Treo, but I can't see that happening for about a year.

But for now, for your needs, if you're looking to upgrade from a VDX and don't want to spend too much money, see what kind of deal you can get on a Prism.

Yea, I pretty much figured that out. After the Newton, they won't try again. Stick to computers and maybe consumer electronics? An Apple Digital Camera, LOL. Who knows? But *sigh* most likely they'll be sticking to making niice desktops and laptops. I want a PowerBook, my G4 is getting old...

Hehe, hope I don't sound rude, but how much are you willing to sell it for? My friend just dropped and killed his Visor. He's looking for a replacement...how do you define acting "funny?"

That was a general 'you' not you personally. For me, it would mean the ability to not bother with a laptop while on the road (PalmVNC, POP3, and a Telnet session would give me all I need on the road). Unfortunately, ThinkOutside/Targus was too little/too late with a Stowaway, so I'll have to wait until the successor to my Edge to be able to do that.

Would the treo make it easier?

Are you no longer using your edge?

Nope, because I couldn't activate one here, and I think it's overpriced at the 'with activation' price as it is.

I'm still using it, but there isn't any point in my getting a modem and keyboard for it if I don't see myself having it past June (if the color Handera doesn't appear by PCExpo - which is supposedly the latest timeframe set by someone at the company, I'll probably just get a 330). I can cope with a laptop for the relatively few trips I'll have to take between now and then.

Thank you upon a thousand times. I've been desirous of a pda that will work with linux, (i.e. OS4 isn't supported yet, and serial ports seem to be easier to map to /dev/pilot), will transfer my current information from my m500 (i.e. SD support or adapter - no clie), etc.; I had forgotten all about the handera. The time for a new pda has arrived. Remind me, do CF modems and/or ethernet adapters work with it? How about a keyboad? Conjecture: would a Palm III vaja case fit?

Nevermind about the case. The buttons wouldn't match up and the speaker would be muffled.

The list of supported accessories is here. As you can see, there are quite a few modems, ethernet (wired and wireless), and keyboard options (it's compatible with all Palm III keyboards, so you might be able to find them cheap). IIRC, there are even a few CF modems not on the 'supported' list which actually work. As you posted subsequently, the Vaja case would fit, but the stuff wouldn't line up.

Alright. The 802.11 CF did it. Wireless internet at home and work, plus phone options when I go see my dad (so I can keep up with class work when I go back). Not to mention having a keyboard, syncing with linux, etc. This is going to be nice. I need more money.

It went from having the little battery icon being half black on Tuesday to being completely dead on Thursday without being used at all on Wednesday. It's never happened before. I put some new batteries in and stuck my backup module in, and everything seems to be ok.

You don't sound rude at all, but I'm not planning to sell it until I figure out what's going to replace it.

I'd be willing to bet that everything is. Fluke.

I guess that's the point of the thread, lol. I'd say replace it with a Sony T615 if you have the money and you want to start becoming a power user. Otherwise, get the Sony S360. They're both nice units, for great prices. Keep me posted on if you're going to sell your Visor or not. Thanks!
