By the way, I did set up a 3500 thread to get it it of this loooong thread if anyone is interested. It is just sitting out there, so post there if you have a 3500. I think it warrants its own topic at this point!

I'll keep an eye on both threads. Let me know if you get the Mark Space modem cable to work. For that matter, has anybody tried the Mark Space Modem cable yet with the 3500 other then myself?

I had not heard the phone firmware theory yet. I am leary of calling Sprint to ask the question. They will probably be shocked to know there is even any firmware in the phone. Do you know how to update the firmware?

I know all about the TTL problem, but it seems that if the phone respondes to the laptop through the data cable correctly, and if the Mark Space modem cable works correctly, than the problem must be in the initialization string. On a stretch I actually went into the Windows modem control panel and found the itialization string Windows is using (AT&FE0&C1&D2VI) to get a connection and tried it instead of AT&FX4 with no luck. Does anybody know enough about initialization strings to help? For some reason I feel like we need a different initializatin string.

One more thing. Did you say you were able to get the serial cradle+null modem to dial? What settings are you using? I can try it with my Mark Space modem cable.

Good luck on the init strings, I have had zero success from both Samsung and Sprint PCS. Samsung won't even return my calls on the matter. As I understand it you can do some freaky stuff with cellphones if you have a serial cable and know the proprietary commands of the phone. That is probably why it is so hard to come by.

Do a search on something like 'phone codes' and you will see what I mean

(FWIW I did try some AT commands using pTelnet, but it has been a while... I got 'ERROR' from a few of them, so I think they don't support all of the AT command set, probably just the ones you need to dial, hang up, etc... I was trying to desperately turn off flow control on the phone and couldn't figure things out)

Error: modem not found ( 0x1106)

I read your post that you successfully connected to Sprint PCS. I like to know the Settings on your Phone and Visor. How does your cable connectoin look like? I have been getting the -- Error: modem not found ( 0x1106). So far not sucessful.

I have the following Setup:

VISOR>>>Mark Space HM9 >>> Sprint Touch Point WW Cable >> Sprint Touch Point Phone.

Visor Settings Are those described on the Threads and on the QNC instructions. I am trying to connect with QNC.

Havent done anything to the phone

RTS line

We are seeing a number of cell phones which require the RTS line to be asserted to properly function. This presents problems with the Visor since it does not support hardware handshaking (doesn't have RTS, CTS on the cradle connector.) However, there have been some prototype Mark/Space DCH-M9 cables made with a "fake RTS". This is a fairly simple modification since that cable design already has a "fake DTR" - the DTR is permanently asserted. Therefore, all that is required is to connect RTS to DTR. That can be readily accomplished by opening the D-sub end and connecting pin 4 to pin 7. This simple modification has been successful in getting the M9 to work with Samsung phones, for instance.

The cables manufactured starting the end of this month (Feb 2000) have this modification (on the DCH-M9, DCH-M2, DCH-CI.) There are a few other interesting things going on as well. A 6" modem cable will be offered - called DCH-6M9RTS or some such name, which is useful for particular cell phones. Some other particular Qualcomm phones have been found to work well with an alternate version of the DCH-H9 modified to a "modem" connection. This "DCH-MODH9" also will be offered in a 6" configuration - convenient for cell phone usage.

However, I will make mention that there is no guarantee that a given cell phone will work with an arbitrary modem cable - so it is best policy to wait until it has been announced that a particular Mark/Space cable works with your cell phone before you buy that cable. No sense in taking any needless chances!

This simple modification of the Mark/Space cable also works with the SprintPCS Touchpoint cellphones!! (I have the early Sprint Touchpoint 1200. It's actually made by Denso Wireless - but says Qualcom on the back).

How-to Modify MkSpc Cord

The Post Above says that all that is required for the Mark Space cable to work with some Cell Phones is to "Connect the DTR to RTS"

- How Easy or Hard is it to Do this? It sounds easy.
- Since I am a Dummy regarding this, It will be really nice if somebody could Post some detailed instructions as to how exactly this is done.


- (rmapes -> good to Hear that the cable works with Touchpoint!)

- Mark Space was nice enough to Oblige to have my Old cable exchanged for a small fee. But if this a very simple thing to do, I rather do it myself.

$25 for a DCH-M9? What a bargain!

Now that is an excellent price for a Mark/Space DCH-M9! Especially when you consider the number of devices which one can attach to with it. There's a large number of cell phones that it works with (along with the PC data cable.) It works with just about every kind of GPS out there. And do you know, there's a gentleman that climbs up on the Himalaya mountains with his Mark/Space cable - I'm not making this up! - and uses it to connect to from a Visor to his Data Loggers at 20,000 feet. Now that's a cable! And a real bargain at that price.

Multiple uses for Purple Data Cables

I observe that there are some of the Purple RS232 converter cables up for sale here. I'll make mention of something interesting about them, for folks that might not already know ...

The standard 6" RS232 converter cable (PDCH-M9-6) is in fact a true RS232 converter, which works with Visor Solo, Deluxe, and Prism. In fact, this cable will work with just about all cell phones. (There are a few exceptions, see the "Product Selector" Matrix on www.pcables.com.

Therefore, if one were to decide to purchase this extra cable which is for sale, they could likely use it for the cell phone they have today, for any of many devices such as GPS and modems, or any cell phone which becomes available in the future - after all, it operates on True RS232.
