New MemPlug design

Just read some news, Pi will begin to ship a new MemPlug with new plastic design in these few weeks. In this new design, the SmartMedia will no longer stick out.

And they said a beta version Laucher III was ported to MemPlug already.

Here's a thought.. Does anybody around here know if the companies listed on memplugs "buy it" page will ship to the US? I would presume the shipping would be outrageous but if they will do it, we may get them quicker. I know if I ordered from an overseas company on 4/6, I would have received my product by now.

Now they've announced the Pocket Chess 2.5 module as being available. I want one of those as well but I'll order it from Amazon or even Staples or even do without before I order anything else from PalmVermin.

I'm with you 100%. I canceled my order and will never buy anything from PalmScum either. However, I will also wait for a CF springboard because 1. The Amazon problem leads me to believe that there may be a deeper underlying problem at Pi and 2. Pi is at least partially to blame since they only had one distributor in the U.S. and have not made any overt moves to rectify the problem with that distributor.

I have had my memplug on order for over a month and I am very annoyed with Palmgear. I have seen that Nxist is coming out with a CF verison called NxDrive-CF. Has anyone heard about this and will it be like the memplug but with CF? The only problem is that you have to buy it from palmgear.

I really think all the comments about PI are a little harsh. Here's a company, based in Hong Kong, that's trying to produce an innovative product that works on another product that itself is fairly new. Are they expected to mass produce without gauging demand? They brought the product to market when it was ready. If they had announced the product and said that it wouldn't be ready for shipping for months, everyone would be begging them to ship whatever they could, whenever they could (like we're now doing with the unannounced new CF Adapter that Dave Kessler mentioned). Or they'd be accused of advertising vaporware.

As far as distributing with PalmGear is concerned, how many choices do you think they had? Companies like Staples don't deal in products that only sell in the hundreds worldwide, it's barely worth entering a new product like that into their purchasing system. And maybe the profit margin is just too minimal.

The advantage that US-based companies have is that they can sell direct, without the distribution chain.

I've really wanted one too - ordered from PalmGear and then cancelled, but that's because I felt PalmGear was uncommunicative and misleading.

My point exactly Anomaly.. I've never had anything bad to say about PI. They probably have hundreds maybe thousands sitting there waiting for PalmGear or Amazon to send a PO. PalmGear however.. They are misleading, incompetent and have no idea how to do business.

I'm willing to put up with their crap to get a MemPlug but as I said before, I'll jump to CF when a true Springboard solution happens. First come first served.

Sorry if you think I was harsh. However, palm gear is not their only distribution option, places like Staples do sell some lower unit volume items, the mem plug has a bigger market than hundreds worldwide and companies outside the USA can certainly sell direct. Just check out the web and see where some of the companies selling there are located. Therefore, I have to stick by my assertion that Pi itself does carry some of the blame. But, I will certainly agree that the majority of the problem comes from Palm Gear.

BTW, Amazon sells the Memplug (although they don't have it in stock yet).

Yeah, they posted that page the week after I ordered from PalmGear. I emailed them about it and they said it wasn't available. I figure they'll take some orders for it and then order some when they see the demand. Kinda a broken premise as the average person will order it from PalmGear and get on their merry-go-round. After all, PalmGear says it will ship in a week! Right?!?!?

Angry Widget Dot Com?

According to PalmGear, they're stuck in customs. Not sure if that's a crock or not.. Is that really possible in this day and age? Or is this another excuse?

I have an email in to widget.com asking if they have any MemPlugs. They do list it on their website but I'd like to make sure. They get 50.04 pounds with shipping and taxes which translates to approx. $72 It may actually be worth the extra 20 bucks to actually know I'm getting one and the two weeks that shipping would take pales compared with how long it's been for PalmScum.

Customs is a government organization. Does that answer the question?

I think Amazon does the similar thing as PalmGear. That is why they don't have MemPlug in stock. I feel Amazon may not even place any P.O. at all.

Widget UK has them and I've ordered from them and cancelled the PalmGear order.

Amazon does the same thing as PalmGear but with one difference: They don't say they have them (MemPlug + SMC) and then string the customer along. Amazon says they aren't available but will take orders. When Amazon gets enough orders, they will order them.

If PalmGear had been honest about the availability I wouldn't be as furious with them. Their way of doing business is flawed from a customer service standpoint. They could have said back in April that they were having customs problems and that it may take 2 months to get one.

Selling software from an automated download server is one thing, selling physical objects calls for a different CRM setup altogether.

Considering that the 20th is on a Sunday, I wouldn't count on it.

This being the 19th means that tomorrow PG ships, right?

Tomorrow, tomorrow is only a day away.

Unhappy Doh! New ship date! 5/29/2001

PalmGear just updated the ship date on the MemPlug. It is now supposed to ship on 5/29/01. The saga continues!

I really feel for everyone. Even though I started this whole thing out here, I have since received my replacement Memplug to replace the defective (IMHO Used) Memplug they sent me. It is working just fine. I really do understand everyone's frustration, and wish there was something I could do for everyone (except give you my Memplug - you'd have to pry it from my cold, dead hands! ). All I can say is continue to contact them. Don't settle for watching the dates change without contacting them. Talk to their Shipping Supervisor, Tiffany. Inform them that you are contacting teh Better Business Bureau. Discuss the legal options you have via class action (really just a threat, but something to try to catch their attention), etc. And remember, you can be firm and upset and frustrated, and CLEARLY convey it all, and remain polite - that is the best way to get people to listen. If you start shouting, the stop listening. Keep at 'em!

Look at the bright side. By the time it all gets straightened out, you'll probably get the new model (the one I am dying for, dang it!), plus the version of Launcher III that I am beta testing which "autofilemoves" apps off the SM card for running, will be complete. (And I must say it is sweet - just needs some more work on getting databses transferred back and forth and changes saved and moved back to the card...)

Have faith - everything will work out in the end - it always does somehow...
