Question

I posted this question a couple weeks ago, soon after the Edge debut, thought it would be good to ask again, since I have yet to see/feel/test an Edge.

I had a Visor Deluxe, soon after they debuted. The main issue I had with the deluxe was its wimpiness - 3 screen cracks 2 from falls < 1 foot.

I have yet to fix/replace the 3rd one, i've been 'visorless' for a few months. Then I see the Edge annoucement...

For those of you with an Edge - is it more rugged? Do you think it would withstand short drops? Am I being too hopeful?

Hopefully I'll see and feel one soon. I'd appreciate any toughts.

Alan

the other day i left my platinum in a cab. so i went to a local retailer to replace it. at the time i was considering buying an edge just cause i figured that being visorless left me a convenient means of upgrading. however, after holding the edge, i thought it felt very cheap and frail. i passed and bought another plat.

however, two days later a cabbie knocked on my door and returned my original plat so i've returned the second one for a refund.

but the edge, to me, is not worth the $600 canadian bux they're asking for it. on top of that i thought the stylus sucked and the "protective lid" felt like a dime store sherrif's badge. though i've never dropped my visor, i'd hate to do so with an edge.

Arrow Luck and

It depends on your luck. I have seen Visor Deluxes drop down flights of stairs without a scratch. I have also seen some go kaput from just a few feet.

I think the Edge is more rugged though because of its metallic casing. If people can sit on it and nothing goes wrong and a 200+ pound person can stand on it (I have seen this happen!) without it breaking, then I can say that it is rugged.

alanolson:

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but that's what cases were invented for.

I didn't learn that lesson, either, until I dropped my first visor.

Until these things start shipping WITHOUT glass screens, there's always going to be a good chance that you'll break them unless you protect them with a good case.

Edge Ruggedness

Just bought the Visor Edge a few hours ago! First impression = the Edge feels more solid to me than any other prior Handspring product.

I wouldn't worry about durability. There is no "flex" to the case and the cover actually covers the screen so that dust, pocket lint, etc. can't easily get on your screen.

Enjoy!
