For you AvantGo lovers, I just wanted you to know that I have been running a beta version of Avantgo that has wireless capabilities for a few weeks now and it's pretty powerful stuff. I'm not sure how much I can disclose, but basically, it lets you browse all AvantGo channels when you're online. It's really cool to be viewing the channels you normally sync with, then, at a moment's notice, search for something on a channel that you don't currently sync. Like I said, pretty powerful stuff.

Um... maybe I misunderstood.

I have plugged my Minstrel in numerous times and been able to browse my channels. Sometimes syncing close to 2MB everytime a channel or two doesn't get fully in. I think slip in the MinS and see all the pages.

If it is a beta, shouldn't it be public? Probably not, I should know better... but I want to see what you are talking about.

Yeah, I guess I wasn't that clear; let me elaborate a little. My AvantGo screen looks like the normal screen, except theres a "Go Wireless" link at the bottom. Clicking on that takes me to an AvantGo Wireless home page. There are some PQAish "wireless" channels that I have configured to be on that page such as Infospace Movies and MapBlast!Wireless. There are also "Browse" and "Search" links that give you access to ALL, repeat ALL AvantGo channels that are on their website; with the same categories and subcategories as the website.

What this means that I don't need really need to be selective about which AvantGo channels I choose to load on my Visor during a HotSync. This is because with this new version of software, I have access to every single channel AvantGo carries. I can browse each quickly and efficiently, with the pages loaded in the same "PDA friendly" format I'm used to seeing on my AvantGo channels. Essentially, I can free up my 1 MB of memory that is being used by AvantGo(at least significantly reduce it).

I'm sure my explanation isn't doing it justice, but it's very slick IMHO.

I happen to be a registered AvantGo user that lives a few miles from AvantGo's headquarters and last month I received an e-mail asking for participants for a "useability test" on some new AvantGo wireless software. So I spent about an hour and a half trying it out for them and as I was leaving I told the guy that I couldn't wait for it to come out. He said he'd e-mail me the link so I could download the beta.

As for the release date, I didn't ask and he didn't say, but I think it should be getting pretty close. There were some bugs initially that I found in the beta and a lot of channel icons (logos) were missing and replaced with an "X". Now, the bugs are fixed and all the channel logos are there, so hopefully it'll be released soon.

OK, it's the 10th, so where is it?!? Couldn't find it at the AvantGo site.

Waiting with baited breath.

First off, you're not the only one. I have been keeping it in the back of my mind since the press release. I am developing a wireless strategy for a client and if this 4.0 is what I think it is... then all my research could possible be solved by one application. How nice is that?

I have called the Chicago office and San Mateo (I think that is it... I don't want to look it up right now). They say they are "shipping" but I wonder if they are using the same buzzword as me but meant physically putting it in a box. Oh well... I have two messages into them, I need 4.0!!!
