I'm looking forward to it! If nothing else, these awards remind me of how excited I get when these products first come out and get reviewed, the heady listing of features, the mad specutlation, the (unfortunate) question of when and if they'll be available, the maddening bugs, and so on. Stuff that seems old hat after awhile, it's nice to see how exciting it is.

Oh, and Miradu, don't worry, We still like you!!

It's only version 0.5. Have you ever heard a software with version number 0.5 called released version? Not until 1.0, right?

Keep in mind that I don't see anything wrong with MemPlug getting this Storage Module award. It's a great product and they definitely have some nice features that I wish we currently offered. My only complaint was the implication that there's no other game in town.

I appreciate James acknowledging that the statement was just an opinion and I do understand the challenge of trying to be informative, enthusiastic and objective in just a few sentences.

My congratulations to PIT for winning the award! They're a great competitor and we'll continue to go toe-to-toe with them to keep Visor flash card technology on the cutting edge

Kopsis just released beta 13 of 2.0.0 today.

Wait!! The 2.0.0 version number is for the whole CF adapter software (FALib etc.), not just VFSHelper. Since Kopsis puts them together as a package (the softwares can not be seperated), it's meaningless to give an indivisual version number for the VFSHelper (Kopsis can give it, say, 0.2.2, but what for?). On the other hand, Memplug does give their VFS software a version number. I don't think the naming matters. The point is that both VFS softwares are still in beta, incomplete form. I think Kopsis is closer to the end zone though.

Actually we released version 1.5.13 today which is the 13th beta release (Kopsis beta testers seldom complain about getting bored ) of what will become version 2.0.0 of our complete FlashAdapter software package when it goes into final release. Not that it matters, I just don't want to have 1000 emails on Monday asking where to find the 2.0.0 beta software

OK, I'm pretty confused. I've been using the original Handspring 8MB Springboard on my Platinum for some time now; some programs I can run off of it, such as some reader programs.

But now I understand I can get a huge 64MB Compact Flash card (the kinds most digital cameras seem to use) by way of an Springboard such as the MemPlug or the FlashPlus, or others it seems like. And I can even run _most_ programs off of them??? But I have to use software such as PiDirect and VFS (Virtual something or other?) to run them?

Like everyone else, I want to put more databases (and fun stuff like AvantGo newspapers or eBooks) on my Visor so that I have lots of information at my fingertips. So obviously I would like to have as seamless of a virtual memory as possible. So I'm guessing software is the most important thing: whether PiDirect or Virtual Something-or-other works more invisibly.

So which is best? How about adapters for CF cards versus adapters for SD cards? Is CF or SD preferable?

I was seriously considering getting a Palm m505 because I would like color in a very portable package, and those 16MB or 32MB SD cards look like a lot of memory... but how does running programs off of the Palm SD cards compare to PiDirect or other software out there? This might help me decided whether to upgrade to the Visor Pro or Palm m505!

Thanks for any advice,
Alice Linden

In no way did I mean to offend anyone by my comments, and in NO WAY! David, did I mean to say that the FlashPlus or FAFileMover is dead, or not a viable competitor. For people who took it that way, I apologize. The meaning of the first phrase got lost, but I still stand by my statement. My explanation:

A better term to use would be that the MemPlug leads the market, or the MemPlug owns the retail market. Therein lays my original meaning. I meant this for the brick&mortar retail. The average Joe visor user who wants more space, can go to the place they might of bought it (CompUSA maybe?) and get a module. Is a product bad if it's not sold at CompUSA? No! The Visor had killer sales, and it took more than four months for it to get into the retail market from when it was first released. I just didn't think that the FlashPlus had penetrated the consumer market as thoroughly as the MemPlug. Consumers when buying the MemPlug don't necessarily have to go through the problems of PalmGear, or have to worry about the security of buying from smaller sites on the web (which is a falsely lead fear - the small sites probably are safer than Amazon, being that hackers would go for the big sites and get thousands of credit cards, not a couple hundred, thats another discussion though ). Also I meant this, that in my opinion, throughout the year the MemPlug has been the leader. That may change though as new companies innovate, and new ideas come to the marketplace. Remember the rumers of the Innogear InnoDrive?

Both products are great products; that is why the FlashPlus got an honorable mention, it was a close second. Also both products wouldn't be around without each other. The Memplug and the FlashPlus wouldn't be here without the original ideas by David Kessler, and the FlashPlus wouldn't be here without the MemPlug innovating the market further, and bringing flash into the module. Competition can be a very good thing, and I look forward to seeing how FAFileMover becomes better software and the future hardware that will be developed, as it things get older and more advanced. Whether it's positive or negative, I appreciate your comments; E-mail me at [email protected]

Addressing the Mac OS and Applications

I think the selection of the Eyemodule II was right on for the Multimedia award. I was also pleased that the write-up mentioned the fact that the desktop software worked well for both the PC and the Mac.

With that having been said I am dissappointed with the selection of Wordsmith for application of the year. While wordsmith is a wonderful application for the PC, it isn't for the Mac platform. Not only does Wordsmith fail to integrate with MS Word on the Mac, moving files to an RTF format prior to synching is a royal pain. And, the new version of Wordsmith require Mac OS 9.0 or above, while for the PC environment it supports Windows 95, 98, 2000, etc.

With all due respect to the great functionlity this program offers the PC user, BlueNomads unwillingness to address the Mac community should be precisely what kept it from getting the application of the year award.

From what I have heard, SD is considerably slower than CF. m505 is a color device and Visor Pro is a b&w device, so you are comparing apple and orange. You may want to wait a little bit longer until a new color device out from Handspring (I am not sure when it will be). Post your needs for databases and documents (including AvantGo and the like) and we can give you suggestions. Otherwise it's actually case by case. If you want to use VFS on Handspring devices, I would suggest to go with FlashPlus since they(Kopsis, the author of Flashplus' software) are more dedicated to the VFS software than the other company.

Question I can't locate the Location Module of the Year...

I click on the link and get an empty page. Do I need the location module to find it?

From the Awards
The 2001 Awards begin on September 24; each business day we will announce a winner from one of the below categories, finishing with the Product of the Year on October 9th.

Whence the awards? Today's the 8th, and I count one more business day after today. Are there not 3 awards left?

What's the visor o the year?

Maybe they're waiting to see if this rumor (look at the bottom of the first page) is true? Whatever the reason, I sure as heck wouldn't give it to the Edge considering its spotty QC. I'd also consider it iffy to give it to the Neo or Pro since they're almost too new. Unfortunately, those are the only new Visors. I guess the Pro would get it by default.

Product of the Year

Hmm...I wonder if this will assuage the feelings of those who thought the FlashAdapter was treated as non-existent?

Well now, it just wouldn't be right to receive an award without giving a long, boring acceptance speech. Unfortunately, I'm pressed for time so a short, boring one will have to do

Thanks to VisorCentral, not just for the award, but for providing the forum that helped Kopsis find out about the Japanese CF+ adapter research. It was that information that gave us a shove down the path of finding a way to support CF memory cards.

Thanks to our partners in the hardware world who've invested time and money in producing modules based on the FlashAdapter design. Without them, our customer base would still be a handful of brave do-it-yourself module builders.

Thanks also to the folks at PIT for being a strong competitor and keeping us on our toes looking for ways to improve the FlashAdapter software.

But mostly, thanks to all of our dedicated customers/testers who've endured countless beta releases and submitted hundreds of problem reports and suggestions for improvements. The pace of development in this market and the quality of the resulting products is a direct result of our customers playing an active role in the development process.

It's been an exciting year for Visor owners! Kopsis is very proud to have been a part of that and looks forward to bringing you new exciting products in the year to come

Congrats to Dave Kessler and Kopsis Engineering!

Though I only downloaded the software yesterday, I am already appreciating its benefits.

Am I on crack or wasn't there a best value award that was to be given out?
