OK gang,

Order placed.

I should have the casings in my hand by possibly Friday, but more likely Monday.

I ordered 100 of these little boogers so keep on making requests!

Since I ordered so many, I got them cheaper than anticipated. Here's the deal:

$4 ea. includes shipping (US only)

This includes a little more than $1 for my time and capital risk (I raised this a bit since I ordered so many of them). It also includes a little cushion for my shipping estimate. (If you want to order 10 or more, e-mail me and I'll try to work you a deal.)

PayPal me at [email protected] and I'll send them out when they arrive. Include in your PayPal your mailing address please.

I am willing to mail overseas, but obviously the price will be modified accordingly.

tyler

P.S. Deal subject to change if I learn that I really screwed up on an estimate! (If you've already paid me though, I'll honor the amount you sent based on the above deal.)

More information on this...there is not a price break from TDS for bulk orders...I'm mostly hoping we can save some money on the shipping since that is another 60% tacked on to the purchase price of just one...

A friend of mine renegged (sp?) on his promise to build me one of these after I'd already bought all of the equipment, including the springboard module housings. I'd be willing to ship someone who has experience building this kinda thing one or two module housings, plus my PCB; They'd mod the PCB and send it back to me (prepaid), keeping the module housings for themselves. Interested? E-mail me: [email protected].

Thumbs up Don't forget the Japanese version...

You may want to check out this Japanese page on the Visor CompactFlash adapter. (I mentioned it in the FAQ.)

I would love to be able to test out one of these. I have 224 MB of CompactFlash cards for my Kodak DC4800 digital camera, but I my smallest (!) is 64 MB and I don't think I'm brave enough to beta test with these cards. Maybe I'll find myself an 8 MB card somewhere... Too bad I'm not equipped to build the thing myself.

Smile I will make CF modules for you!

For those that are soldering-iron averse, I, in an effort to increase my for-gadgets income, will make a CF module for you. As this is not the forum for discussing the details of such a transaction, go here:

http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...p?threadid=8606

(I gotta do something with all these SB housings!)

alternative casing

Ok guys, I posted a little while back about using the metal plates and the plastic card frame that make up the PCMCIA case as an alternative to the plastic springboard modulehousing. I'll be finishing up the mod with this housing this weekend and I'll post pictures as soon as I can get to a digital camera.

I still think the plastic springboard module housing makes an awesome case. This is especially true if you want to use the short TDS adapter (note that this adapter does not seem to come in a metal case anyway). I, however, think that using the original metal case makes a great option because it is very slim and fits into the cool little plastic case that the flash adapter came in. I've found that an old metrocard folded in half slides perfectly into the springboard slot to make up for the slim profile of the pcmcia card and makes for a nice tight fit. I anticipate that this will work nicely since it is easy to carry those metrocards in your wallet. I still advocate the use of the plastic modules, but when mine arrives I'll be saving it in case I get a TDS adapter. Until then I think the long adapter in its orignial metal case will make a good alternative. Hopefully the software will be out soon. I can't wait! Aside: after trying for a few days to get a good deal on a CF card on ebay, I've noticed that you can find new 16MB CF cards for around $30 using cnet. This seems like a good deal to me. Anyone else found them for cheaper?

CF Cards - where have they gone?

I've been watching e-Bay for CF cards... it looks like they're going for more $$$ now than they were a week ago... I think our demand has increased the prices!
Anyway, does anyone know of a good place to order (new or used) CF cards? I've been all over and they fluctuate in price a great deal. Especially on e-Bay.

Good deals can still be had on eBay. I got an 8MB CF on Monday for $10.50 + $3 shipping. It just takes a little work catching the good ones.

Thumbs up It works!!!

I am now the proud owner of a custom-made CF Card Adapter for the Handspring Visor!!! And it actually works, too!!! Now the question is... where is the software???

It actually wasn't that difficult, thanks to the great instructions provided by DK. Take your time, double and triple check everything, and it is fairly easy.

One thing that should be noted is that when finished, the CF Card actually goes into the adapter facing backwards. This is a small detail but I think it might help others by preventing the "there's something wrong with this picture" period of panic that I went through

Agreed. I built mine this last weekend. Great instructions! As MarkEagle stated I had a bit of a panic attack when I got to the way the card was supposed to go into the SB module. I didn't have a SB module and just wanted to test it out. I worked slow and check the picture a hundred times. =) Also having my back-up module at hand to compare the pictures and what not to was a help. It worked the first time! My first hardware hack job! I'm very pleased with the results.

With it being this easy to construct, it makes me wonder why a larger company hasn't produced a product like this by now. It would seem like something people would want. I know I would have purchased one if it had been available. As it is I have one I made myself, and I'm very happy about it.

A little off topic, but....

Correct me if I am wrong but I am under the impression that CompactFlash I and II are identical aside from the form factor. Furthermore, unlike modems, etc., the IBM Microdrive does not require any different firmware/software over standard CompactFlash II (although the power utilization is much higher).

So, when the CF I form factor Microdrive comes out, one could theoretically install it on the Visor. Or if you're really itchin' to try it, I suppose you can buy one of those CF card extenders and install a CF II Microdrive on one of those.

(I don't plan on buying a Microdrive, however, because they seem too fragile, and eat too much battery power to be useful. And I'm talking for my camera here not for the Visor.... not too many people would need 1 Gb for a Visor... I hope.)

cards and adaptors

A little patience on EBAY goes a long ways.
I got an adapter for $9 and 2 4meg cards for $4 each. Settled for the 4meg cards to keep the cost of blowing them up, down!! (I dont have alot of faith in my handiness.....)

Have it all together now, will build it this weekend.

Cant wait to get it working. I want this for 2 reasons: 1) Just to prove I CAN build something and 2) for all of my PALM using co-workers. "Lets see YOU 200+ Meg PALM!!!!!"

Have a great weekend all -
Tim

Ice Springboard cases?

Somewhat off topic, but...
I've done a little bit of digging but can't find any Ice (or other) flavored Springboard cases. Just graphite. Has anyone stumbled across them? Are they available commercially?

Question Run Programs

Will you be able to run programs from the Flash Card adapter module or is it just for storage?

I'm hoping to order these adapters later this weekend, so please e-mail me if you are interested. Based on the current interest, they will be $32 including shipping via prioity mail. A second or third adapter would be $28 each.

CF application

Here's another application idea I have for this Springboard. I'm not sure how useful this one would be, but it is worth discussing...Could it be set up to allow you to move files directly from the CF card to the PC through the USB cradle. From my understanding, this would be much like the MiniJam which has a conduit to move files from the PC directly to the MMC's. I would love to be able to take pictures with my digital camera, put the CF card in the visor and then sync the visor to move those pics to my hard drive. It would basically allow the Visor to become a CF card reading drive for a PC...

Some of the newer CF cards (lexmark jumpshot) have this feature without involving the visor.

Here's the final instructions I've sent out to anyone who has expressed interest. If you want to join our bulk order of TDS adapters, just follow these instructions:

"Okay everyone,
I'm going to try to order the TDS adapters on Sunday night (10/15). If you definitely want to order one, send your payment via Paypal to '[email protected]' by Sunday at midnight EST. The cost is $32 for your first one and $28 each for any additional adapters. Please include your shipping address in the memo of the PayPal payment. Let me know if you have any questions."

OK Gang,

The UPS man came tonight. I should get all the housings out for those that have already sent money tomorrow.
