Question ATT Worldnet and a Thinmodem

I am trying to get my Thinmodem to connect to my ATT Worldnet account but am running into trouble in that I am getting either a "no dial tone" error message or I can hear the modem trying to connect but it never does.

The following information may be of use:
* I am running a Handspring Visor and Thinmodem version 2.1.
* I have a rotary phone and require the use of area code in making local phone calls.
* Obtained my ATT user information using the process described in the Thinmodem FAQ.

On my Visor I have entered the following information under Preferences:

NETWORK - Main
Service: AT&T Worldnet
User Name: [email protected]
Password: *************
Connection: Standard Modem
Phone: 13309830000

NETWORK - Details
Connection Type: PPP
Idle Timeout: 3 Minutes
Primary DNS: 204.127.160.2
Secondary DNS: 12.102.240.2
IP Address: Automatic

CONNECTION - Standard Modem
Name: Standard Modem
Connection Method: Serial to Modem
Dialing: Rotary
Volume: High

CONNECTION - Details
Speed: 57,600 bps
Flow Ctl: Automatic
Init String: AT&FX4

Any help that is given would be greatly appreciated.

In the Connection Prefs under Details, select Other for the country and give that a try. You didn't specify in your post, so I'm assuming you have United States selected.

I also use ATT, make sure your password is the funny one (you probably know this because of the numeric username)
I have my idle timeout set to power off
here are my DND#'s
P - 204.127.129.2
S - 12.102.244.2

That's all that I have that's different, hope this helps...

Lightbulb Another idea.

I have a Thinmodem Plus. If I remember correctly, I was having a similar issue trying to connect mine to Earthlink. I had to go into Prefs: Network: Details: Script and delete what was there before it would work properly. I found this out after speaking with someone at CardAccess (or whoever has now purchased them).

I found their tech support friendly and helpful. That would be my next suggestion.

Sorry, I did not reply back sooner but I was out of town for a few days. I am still trying to get my modem to work and have contacted tech support. Found out the modem would not work on a rotary phone so I switched the setting and location, but still can not get it to work?

A question I have is how exactly should the phone number be entered? As one long string (13309830000) or in some other form.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

The number should be as one long string with no dashes.

If you have not already, take a look at the page from Christopher Zguris.

BTW, some others have recommended using specific DNS servers, but I have had mine set to "Query DNS" and have connected in NY, Chicago, DC area without a problem.

I noticed under Connection you have the following:
quote:
CONNECTION - Standard Modem
Name: Standard Modem
Connection Method: Serial to Modem
Dialing: Rotary
Volume: High
I think this may be where your problem is. I have mine configured to SpringPort, not Serial to Modem. Serial to Modem is what is used when you are connecting to a modem through the HotSync port, not the Springboard as the Thinmodem does.
