Need email help

I just bought a Xircom modem. I use Yahoo for my email server. I have tried MultiMail that came with the modem, and Eudora. Yahoo's smtp server will not accept email from this setup. I receive mail OK, but cannot send email. It seems to be a Yahoo problem. My ISP recommends that I use their email. I really would like to stay with Yahoo, or at least another web based email provider. Any help out there?

I don't think Yahoo allows relaying of mail from other SMTP servers in an effort to prevent spam. Using Eudora, I have to specify my ISP's SMTP in order to send from my VDx.

Need email help

If it is Yahoo not letting me send mail, why can I do the exact same thing using Outlook Express and my PC, and it works. With OE I am still only using Yahoo as a server.

Are you using the same ISP from the desktop and Visor?

Another thing is that Yahoo doesn't allow you to send until the account is authenticated. This occurs when you open the account from the POP server to receive mail. I believe the account then remains open for something like 8 minutes. You cannot just send Yahoo mail... you need to receive first, and then send. Try doing a receive only and then immediately try sending to see if that works.

Yes, same ISP. MultiMail tries to send first, no pop-authentication. Eudora on the other hand recognises this and receives mail before sending mail. Still, the Visor is not telling Yahoo's server something that my PC and Outlook Express do tell it. I sure wish someone could tell me what that is.

I get this error message:

Received unexpected response from outgoing mail server, smtp.mail.yahoo.com. (protocol error) Connection closed. Mail not accepted from this domain.

If you tap Send/Receive in MultiMail, it will indeed try to send first. However, if you tap Receive, let it check for new mail, then tap Send, you might have better luck. Maybe.

Does anyone know of any email client that will work with web based email? My trouble is with Yahoo. Are you having any better luck with Hotmail or MSN or whatever?

I had the same problem with setting up multimail on the xircom. I dial up to the internet with one ISP then attempt to send and receive mail from another.

Multimail allowed me to receive but not send mail giving me the same message. The only way I could solve the problem was to enter the outgoing mail server of my ISP into multimail.

ie
incoming: pop3.mail-isp.com
outgoing: smtp.dialup-isp.com

btw breathe.com is web-based mail which I've used successfully via outlook, oe, web and palm. It has been having some problems lately though.

Yahoo does allow the use of a separate email client. I use Outlook Express on my PC to send and receive ***@yahoo.com email. I solved my own problem last night. On your Visor, go to "Prefs". Then "Network". Click "Details". Uncheck "Query DNS". Two lines will pop up allowing you to specify the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS. Each is a string of numbers that you must get from your ISP. Leave "IP Address Automatic" checked. Don't even ask me why, but Yahoo's SMTP server now authenticates me and I can send email. In an anti-spam move, Yahoo does require you to POP Authenticate before you can send mail. All that means is that you must first receive mail immediately before you can send. MultiMail that comes with the Xircom modem may be fine, but I am using Eudora.
