Why Would it Matter?

I would like to know why would it matter if the CF Card stuck out the top like it would. If i'm not wrong all you do is use it like a disk...Plug it in, transfer a file, use it....after the transfer is done..just take out the CF Card and put it in some kind of case you may have lying around.

Tell me if i'm wrong

I can easily see leaving it in all the time. Why would you want to take it out routinely?

I could definetely see leaving it in all the time, I can see me carrying around all my gameboy games and ebooks. Look at as an upgrade to your memory.

I could see why...

I could see why you would want to, I personally would probably just use it as a zip disk sort of thing. When you want a file you pop in the "Disk" and get the file you need, when your done, you simply take out the "Disk" and use the file you wanted.

The main reason I can think of would be battery life. CF cards are pretty smart and will automatically power off the flash if you don't use them for a few seconds, but the interface logic has to always stay active (i.e. powered). The additional drain on the battery is very small, but for some people, every milliamp hour counts

alternative to module housing

I got my pcmcia to cf adapter today and I was happy to see that the metal isn't crimped on like the sandisk models. I was able to remove and replace the top cover without mangling it. The card fits really nicely into the springboard slot (after filing off the plastic key) and all it needs is a little more thickness to make the fit really solid. I think this would offer a nice alternative for those of you trying to buy springboard module cases (or a way to get started while you scrounge up the case). The card still sticks out of the slot by about an inch, but the plastic card frame and metal backplate surround the card on three sides making a nice package IMHO. The disadvantage of this is that the "module" won't be flush when the cf card is removed...

All that remains is to see if I can get covers to fit on with the wires in place. What is the thinnest wire I can use for this project?

it's a peripheral enhancements "the edge" adapter. I got it at outpost.com for under $10 with free overnight shipping.
From pictures I've seen online, however, it looks like many such cards are constructed the same way...

Do you have any photos you could post? I'm trying to decide whether to get a SanDisk adapter (or one of the others available), or if I should wait to see if the adapter from TDS in England (see dkessler's post on 10.06.00) will work more to my liking.
I carry my Visor in my pocket quite a bit ... I'd hate to risk damaging ANYthing by having an extra inch sticking out the top.
I know, I know ... I could always just take it out and prevent possible trouble before it happens, but before I break out the soldier and flux I want to know all my options.
So, winsk, if you have any pics you could post, please do so. And if you can't post 'em, maybe someone here could do the hosting for you (myself included).
That offer goes to everyone else, too. If you have pics of your CF mod, and don't have a way to share them, contact me and we'll get them online for everyone to see. Please include any vital info (like adapter brand, troubles, etc).

Finished assembling my CF adapter last night. Or at least I've finished with all the cutting soldering. I still don't have a casing.

I'm using one of the Dane-Elec CF adapters. It was a snap to work with. Cutting the traces wasn't difficult at all. I also managed to take the casing off of the adapter without mangling it, so I could have a casing if I wanted. I'm going to wait for a SB module case however. I expect that will just fit better.

Mostly a simple operation. Like the instructions said, I'm walking away for a day and then going to go back to it and make sure I got eveything right. =)

I got the TDS adapter working yesterday. It's an expensive option but the form factor is awesome. The CF card protrudes only about 5mm from the top of the Visor. Just enough to make it easy to grab and yet I can still fit the Visor with a CF installed into my Rhodiana case with only slight case modifications. I'll have pictures and some additional write up online by tomorrow

I've been to their website (www.triangledigital.com), and the prices (US $) are staggering. I'm not a diode junky, just an occasional tinker (tinkerer?), so most of the jargon is over my head. But don't these prices seem outrageous? Especially when you consider that several other PCMCIA to CF adapters can be had for under $10, shipped.
Kessler- when you do the additional write-up, could you include all necessary part numbers? It looks, to me, like there are several necessary parts ... I'd hate to order the wrong stuff (IF I end up going thru TDS).

Springboard housings

Well, seeing as all the housings have already been bought up from wilderf's order, I'm ready to take the plunge myself. (someone has to, or I can't make one!) Tommorrow I plan to call and order $65 of housings (approx. 25 of them).

I will run a similiar deal. Cost plus $1 for me per ea. (~$5 ea.) I'll post exact details tommorrow after I order.

Let me know if you want one and I'll turn them the day I get them.

springboard cases order?

is anyone still interested in doing a bulk order, or willing to add me onto theirs? as i bought sandisk adapters, i can't simply use their chassis, and think the springboard cases would be more elegant anyways...
i will do a bulk order if there's adequate enough interest
